Rosanna Arquette Slams “Bulls–t” Daryl Hannah Portrayal in Love Story

Rosanna Arquette is setting the (love) story straight when it comes to Daryl Hannah.

Following Daryl’s public criticism of Ryan Murphy’s “Love Story” – which she said misrepresented her life and relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr. – Rosanna Arquette supported her friend, bluntly calling the FX series “bullst.”

On March 8th, an actress praised Daryl Hannah in an Instagram post, calling her a wonderful person and a talented actor, writer, director, and longtime environmental activist. She also described Hannah as someone who has a special connection with animals, and celebrated her significant contributions to the world.

Rosanna said the way her character is shown on the streaming series is inaccurate, while speaking about the FX show featuring Dree Hemingway as Daryl.

The 66-year-old stated that Daryl had a very happy five-year relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr., and expressed disappointment that the show didn’t highlight those good times or seem to get input from the Kennedy family.

Rosanna described her relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr. as genuine and a very happy period in his life, noting that his family would confirm this. However, she added that no one ever actually asked them.

Rosanna received a lot of support in the comments on her post, with many celebrities speaking out against the series and in favor of Daryl. Among those who agreed with her were Ione Skye, Griffin Dunne, and Debi Mazar.

Ione, age 55, wrote a message praising Daryl Hannah, saying the actress is genuinely brilliant and that she’s always been a huge admirer of her.

I was so thrilled to see Daryl get the support she deserved! Mr. Griffin, at 70, really hit the nail on the head when he praised her. Honestly, the way she was treated was awful, but she handled it with incredible strength. Her opinion piece in the Times was absolutely fantastic – it was a powerful statement that should have made everyone involved in misrepresenting her feel ashamed. I couldn’t agree more with Mr. Griffin’s assessment!

And Debi, 61, simply added the “100” emoji with the comment, “Yes.”

As a longtime fan, I was so relieved to see Rosanna publicly stand with Daryl. It’s been just two days since Daryl’s powerful opinion piece in The New York Times came out, and she really didn’t hold back about that show. She called it out for being exploitative and how terribly they portrayed her, and I couldn’t agree more.

The writer explained that the character based on her, portrayed as annoying, self-centered, and constantly complaining, was deliberately written that way. She stated the character ‘Daryl Hannah’ in the series doesn’t reflect who she is, how she acts, or her relationship with John, and that the actions shown are false.

I’ve followed the Kennedy family for years, and it was fascinating to learn about Daryl’s relationship with Caroline Kennedy – it was a bit complicated, lasting from 1988 to 1994. But what really struck me was when Daryl spoke out, saying a lot of what was portrayed about their time together just wasn’t true and, in some cases, was actually damaging to their reputation. It’s frustrating when stories get twisted like that, especially involving people’s personal lives.

She stated firmly that she has never used cocaine, hosted parties where drugs were used, or pressured anyone to get married. She also denied ever damaging family heirlooms, disrupting private memorials, leaking stories to the media, or made the insensitive comparison of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s death to the death of a pet.

I’m shocked I even need to explain myself because of a TV show,” the former contestant on Splash—who has been married to Neil Young since 2018—explained. “This isn’t about them exaggerating my personality; they’re making false claims about what I’ve done.”

Despite significant criticism of the show, neither Ryan nor FX has addressed the accusations publicly. TopMob News contacted both for comment, but they haven’t responded yet.

The changes aren’t limited to Daryl’s story in the new show. Read on to learn more about what’s real and what’s made up in Love Story

As a style insider, I found a fascinating detail in Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette. Apparently, Carolyn, played by Sarah Pidgeon, gently steered Annette Bening (portrayed by Megan Channell) away from the dress the designer picked out for the Bugsy premiere and suggested a Calvin Klein suit instead! It really highlights Carolyn’s subtle but confident sense of style and her willingness to offer a different perspective.

It’s unknown if she created the style for future Mrs. Warren Beatty, but a 1996 New York Times article revealed Carolyn was the preferred salesperson for Calvin Klein’s famous customers, like Annette, Diane Sawyer, and Blaire Trump.

According to Paul Wilmott, who was Calvin Klein’s VP of public relations at the time, she expertly helped customers choose clothes, offering advice on what suited them and how to create complete outfits. He described it as a remarkable service, noting that she generated millions of dollars in clothing sales over the years.

In a memorable scene from Love Story, Carolyn demonstrates her sharp instincts by advising Calvin (Alessandro Nivola) to feature Kate Moss in an advertising campaign.

Carolyn was one of the first people to recognize Kate Moss’s potential, and she played a key role in shaping the Calvin Klein image of the 1990s.

In the movie Love Story, Calvin brings Carolyn and John together at a charity event in 1992, and they immediately feel a connection. However, Carolyn playfully declines to give him her phone number, reminding him he can always reach her at work.

“He was just bored,” Carolyn explained to her friends at the nightclub. Just then, Michael Bergin (who her friends playfully called “sexy doorman” and was played by Noah Fearnley) walked in.

John unexpectedly arrived at Calvin Klein and requested a private fitting with Carolyn. He then invited her to dinner, and when he left, her coworkers were completely shocked and excited.

According to Elizabeth Beller’s 2024 biography, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy first met in the spring of 1992. John was at Calvin Klein for a private fitting, and her coworkers were reportedly very excited. He then asked Carolyn to join him at a gala, as MJ Bettenhausen told Beller. However, Carolyn mistakenly believed another woman was his date, so she declined when he invited her to an after-party.

Carolyn and Michael, a model and former hotel doorman, briefly dated starting in the fall of 1992, but their relationship wasn’t very consistent, according to Beller’s book.

In his 2004 book, The Other Man, Bergin claimed he continued a sexual relationship with Carolyn even after she met John, and up until her death. However, according to Beller, many of Carolyn’s friends doubted this claim.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn is waiting at an Indian restaurant for John. She’s about to leave after waiting for 20 minutes when he finally arrives, riding up on his bicycle.

He accidentally left the car unlocked, and when they finished their long date, they discovered it had been stolen. This meant he ended up walking Carolyn home instead.

He said he wished he hadn’t rushed, as they reached her front door. “More time for what?” she asked, and he kissed her. He then wondered if he’d see her again, and she replied that she’d enjoyed their evening together before ending the date.

In real life, John and this person did go on a first date, and it’s possible he biked there and was a little late. However, the scene of them connecting over drinks was likely staged for the show.

Okay, so picture this: I’m totally obsessed with Daryl Hannah, and she’s actually at John’s place when he walks in! It’s so frustrating because he was just going on and on to his cousin and best friend, Anthony Radziwill, about how he can’t stop thinking about Carolyn and all he wants to do is call her! Like, seriously? Daryl is RIGHT THERE, but it’s Carolyn he’s dreaming about? It’s maddening, I tell you, maddening!

He’s planning to take Daryl to a wedding in October 1993 – his cousin Edward Kennedy Jr.’s – despite his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy, being strongly against it. Meanwhile, Carolyn discovers from a tabloid magazine that the man who seemed so interested in her is actually getting back together with his famous ex-girlfriend.

John continued to send Carolyn flowers, and during a chance encounter at an event, he confessed he was struggling because he believed she disliked him. Carolyn responded that she didn’t know him well enough to feel that way.

The unexpected meeting was a memorable way to first show audiences Daryl Hannah, known for her role in Splash. However, the show’s creators didn’t consult with her about it, even though she’s been married to Neil Young since 2018.

Producer Nina Jacobson explained to Gold Derby that they focus on understanding the core motivations of their characters. She said it’s difficult to balance multiple outside expectations when trying to portray real people authentically, so they generally avoid extensive interviews or basing characters directly on individuals except in unusual circumstances.

Daryl acts as a challenge to what the story is trying to achieve, according to Jacobson. However, the writers still aim to highlight that she understands the world of celebrities in a way that Carolyn doesn’t.

As a longtime fan, when John walked in and found Daryl surrounded by her… unique friends, I knew things were about to hit the fan. It was the signal we’d all been dreading! And then, finally, she left him, which was tough to watch, but she really made him confront what he actually wanted out of life. It felt like a huge turning point for his character, honestly.

Daryl promised to come back for her dog, Hank. However, while John was walking Hank, someone asked him for an autograph, causing him to lose hold of the leash. Tragically, Hank was hit by a taxi and killed. John then traveled to Los Angeles to deliver Hank’s ashes to Daryl.

According to the 2024 book JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil, John F. Kennedy Jr.’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, shared that John’s dog, Hank, ran into traffic in Central Park in May 1994 and was struck by a car.

According to his friend Steven Gillon, he traveled to Los Angeles to bury a dog. While he was there, his mother’s health suddenly declined. He felt angry that Daryl had made him attend a pet’s funeral when his own mother was seriously ill with cancer.

In the film Love Story, Jackie (played by Naomi Watts) leaves a voicemail for John while he’s flying, and then collapses at home. This scene was created for dramatic impact, but it’s also meant to emphasize how seriously ill the former First Lady was after her diagnosis with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 1993. She passed away on May 19, 1994.

John and Carolyn hadn’t seen each other since the disastrous gala until they ran into each other again at a fundraiser on May 18, 1992.

They quickly connected and dated throughout the summer, but then drifted apart for nearly two years, as described in Beller’s book. It wasn’t until after Jackie’s passing that they finally reunited and became a lasting couple.

According to executive producer Brad Simpson, the couple’s relationship was more complicated than what viewers saw on the show. He told USA Today that they had to move the storyline forward quickly, and they didn’t think the audience wanted to watch the ups and downs of a relationship that was constantly starting and stopping.

When he brings Carolyn home to his loft for the first time, John realizes he forgot his keys.

Although it looked good on television, the real John was often forgetful, frequently misplacing his keys and wallet. This habit later made Carolyn hesitant to fly with him by himself after he earned his pilot’s license.

Beyond hinting at things to come, John also fails to mention a key detail when he invites Carolyn to a party: it’s actually a formal birthday dinner for his sister, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg.

When John’s behavior worries Carolyn, his wife, Caroline (Grace Gummer) quickly explains that he’s just forgetful, and not intentionally bringing unexpected guests.

According to Carole Radziwill’s memoir, What Remains, John introduced Carolyn to his sister on her 37th birthday, November 27, 1994. The event, held at Carolyn’s apartment on Park Avenue, was more of a party than a formal dinner.

The former Real Housewives star, who attended with Anthony and was excited to see Carolyn, described her friend entering the secure room looking beautiful and unapologetically herself, and acting very warmly and spontaneously.

Caroline embraced John and greeted Carolyn with a friendly “So nice to meet you,” according to Carole. Afterward, Carolyn’s friends offered polite smiles before turning their attention back to John.

Contrary to initial impressions, Carolyn and Caroline actually hit it off immediately, according to Beller’s book, Once Upon a Time. A witness who saw them having lunch described a lively and enjoyable conversation filled with laughter.

After playing touch football with friends, John discovered a letter in his gym bag suggesting Carolyn had used her boss, Calvin Klein, to get a date with him. When Carolyn visited later, John confronted her about the letter, and she was shocked he’d believe such a thing, so she left.

After what felt like a long wait, he finally came to her apartment and admitted he’d made a mistake. This honest conversation led to him telling her he loved her for the very first time.

According to Beller, John did receive a letter outlining alleged details about Carolyn’s social life and relationships, but this happened early in their dating history. The book states that after they dated during the summer of 1992, John abruptly ended things after reading the letter. Carolyn then didn’t respond to his apologies for over a year.

John proposed to Carolyn while they were rowing in a boat, following a visit to Hyannis Port where she’d just met his family for the first time. This included his aunt, Ethel Kennedy (played by Jessica Harper), who is considered the strong-willed head of the family.

Carolyn said she needs some time to consider it, explaining they have several important things to talk over first.

In 1994, for Labor Day weekend, John brought Carolyn to his family’s vacation home. He did agree to help with breakfast duties while they were there, but he signed up for the shift on his own, without asking her.

Terenzio says John proposed to Carolyn while they were on a trip to Martha’s Vineyard over the Fourth of July weekend in 1995. He cleverly proposed by saying, “Fishing is so much better with a partner.”

He proposed with a diamond and sapphire eternity band. On the show, JFK Jr. claimed it had belonged to his mother, but in reality, John asked Jackie’s close friend Maurice Tempelsman to create a ring that resembled her famous emerald and sapphire ring—often called the “swimming ring.” According to Terenzio, John actually gave Carolyn both rings.

According to a friend of John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy made him wait around three weeks before responding to a proposal. While Gillon’s 2019 biography, American Prince, states she didn’t formally accept but was seen wearing a ring and discussing wedding plans with friends, Terenzio’s oral history recounts Carolyn telling her they became engaged over the holiday weekend.

Whether it was before or after they started dating, the couple was engaged for several months before their well-known argument in Washington Square Park in 1996.

Carolyn was a trusted confidante of her boss, Calvin Klein, and she also enjoyed a close friendship with his wife, photographer Kelly Klein.

In the movie Love Story, Kelly (played by Leila George) challenges Calvin when he tells her she can’t continue working for him because of the intense media attention surrounding her engagement to JFK Jr.—news that was splashed across the cover of the New York Post. He feels her personal life will become too disruptive to her work.

Kelly retorted, “With all due respect, you’re hardly one to talk about keeping secrets.” Calvin replied, “You knew what you were getting into from the start.”

The designer unexpectedly asked Kelly to go with her to a gala that evening, hinting that they were breaking up with the phrase, “one last time.”

Calvin and Kelly announced they were separating in August 1996, stating they remained good friends and would live apart while working through any problems, according to columnist Liz Smith. Their divorce was finalized ten years later, in 2006.

At 83 years old, Calvin has been with his partner, model Kevin Baker, for a decade. Baker is 46 years younger than him.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn skips John’s press conference where he introduces George magazine. At the event, he reveals the first cover, which features a playfully provocative photo of Cindy Crawford dressed as George Washington.

Watching from home on TV, she’d reluctantly accepted John’s need to deny he’d proposed. She worried that rumors about her rejecting him would distract from the important news about George.

Carolyn intentionally avoided the launch event on September 7, 1995. Terenzio, responsible for publicly denying John was engaged after a photo of Carolyn’s ring caused rumors, explained that John and his partner, Michael Berman, believed her attendance would be a distraction, and that she didn’t mind not being there.

John’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, recalled in an interview that Carolyn was deeply upset by the public refusal to acknowledge their engagement. Chermayeff believed this moment was an early indication of what their relationship with John would be like – a pattern of him controlling the narrative and dismissing her feelings.

In the fifth episode, Carolyn and John have a heated fight while walking their dog, but the episode concludes with Carolyn happily accepting John’s marriage proposal, despite their earlier conflict.

The highly publicized fight between the couple on February 25, 1996, became instantly famous. Details like John appearing to take Carolyn’s engagement ring, him crying on the curb, and their argument over the dog—with Carolyn famously declaring, “You’ve got my ring, you’re not getting my dog!”—were widely reported and are instantly recognizable.

The show centers around a fight sparked by John’s frustration over Carolyn rejecting his proposal. He angrily claims everything would be fine if she’d just said yes, but they’d actually been engaged for around five months. The series reveals that Carolyn secretly tried on the ring and indicated she was willing to marry him privately, but hadn’t formally accepted before the argument.

From what I understand, talking to Terenzio, a big source of tension in their marriage was John constantly letting his friends walk all over him. It really bothered her to see him being used, and that led to a lot of arguments.

At a wedding, they found themselves seated beside a New York Times reporter who was covering the event for the ‘Vows’ column. According to Terenzio, Carolyn believed it was wrong to put a friend in that position. While she regretted the argument, she was also upset with John, feeling she had been trying to shield him from being exploited.

Following a public argument between Carolyn and John, Ethel extends an invitation to her future niece-in-law, hosting her at her estate in Virginia, Hickory Hill.

Robert F. Kennedy’s widow offered Carolyn some heartfelt advice, warning her that she’d lost the benefit of the doubt. She explained, as difficult as it might be, that men would hurt and frustrate her, pushing her to her limits. Her advice was simple: don’t let them.

Ethel actually had Carolyn brought to her home, where, according to J. Randy Taraborelli’s 2019 book The Kennedy Heirs, she told Carolyn she needed to ignore the negativity and move forward.

Someone who was with Carolyn shared that Ethel Kennedy admitted life as a Kennedy was challenging. However, the mother of eleven explained that she learned to cope by reminding herself every day, ‘I am enough.’ It’s a simple idea, she said, but repeating it helps you truly believe it, and realize that no one – not even the Kennedys – can diminish your self-worth.

Ethel advised Carolyn to stay calm in public, according to the book. She cautioned that these men were quick to anger and warned Carolyn not to let them provoke her into behaving badly where everyone could see.

Carolyn tells her sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette (played by Sydney Lemmon), that she’s considering asking her to be her maid of honor. She explains that Lauren seemed upset about being left out of the wedding planning process.

Carolyn worries that her sister feels left out. She believes resolving this is important, saying, “I don’t want her to feel resentful towards me as I start my marriage.”

Lauren says, “This will mean nothing to her. And it would have meant everything to me.”

John asked Carolyn to invite Caroline to be the maid of honor, hoping it would mend fences. His sister had not only publicly blamed Carolyn for a scene in the park, but also taken it as a reason to call off the wedding. John believed having Carolyn ask Caroline was the best way to resolve the conflict.

Two weeks after their argument at the park, Carolyn went to Calvin to quit her job. She explained she was worried her personal life was interfering with her work, and Calvin confessed he was surprised and a little hurt by the news.

He described her as “a bright light” and assured her she would be well taken care of with Narciso Rodriguez – a designer he used to work with – creating her wedding dress. Once she’s gone, he tidies up his design portfolio, and we briefly see a dress sketch tucked away in a drawer.

“Calvin was very upset” when Carolyn quit, a colleague told Beller. “He felt left behind.”

In the movie Love Story, Calvin finds out about the dress thanks to photos of Carolyn with Narciso and Caroline. However, in real life, Carolyn quit her job before she started seriously planning a wedding.

Ann Freeman (played by Constance Zimmer) fears Carolyn is losing her identity in her upcoming marriage. She expresses this worry privately to Carolyn, but surprisingly reveals the same concerns to everyone during a speech at the rehearsal dinner.

Ann described John as overwhelmingly loving and admitted she was concerned for Carolyn. She wondered how anyone could stay grounded around someone with such a powerful personality. Ultimately, Ann hopes Carolyn can rely on John to be supportive whenever she needs him.

John privately told his future mother-in-law that her daughter means everything to him.

The exact words Ann used that night remain unclear, but John’s friend, Robert Littell, recalled in his memoir, The Men We Became, that she voiced concerns about the marriage, suggesting it might not be what her daughter needed.

And John, he wrote, was “visibly stung by his mother-in-law’s remarks.”

Littell mentioned that while he and a few other guests continued the party on the beach, Carolyn had already gone to bed hours earlier. This suggests the romantic scene in the movie Love Story – where John and Carolyn fall asleep together on the beach and go swimming naked the morning of their wedding – was created for dramatic effect and didn’t actually happen.

Carolyn had a real panic when she discovered she’d have to pull Narciso’s dress—which didn’t have a zipper—over her head after her makeup was already finished.

Gogo Ferguson, the designer of the couple’s unique rattlesnake-rib wedding bands, shared in an interview that dressing Carolyn was a struggle. She described it as if the dress was flowing like cream over Carolyn’s body, while Narciso desperately tried to fasten it. Terenzio noted that Narciso had to repeatedly adjust the dress’s neckline, and they eventually covered Carolyn’s head with a scarf to protect her hair and makeup.

Gordon Henderson, a friend of the bride and the designer of the groom’s tuxedo and the groomsmen’s suits, shared with Town & Country that he also provided a handkerchief to help the groom feel his best. He explained that when a friend is getting married, you want to do everything you can to ensure they’re happy.

In Beller’s Once Upon a Time, Carolyn needs to completely redo her hair and makeup after she gets dressed.

The ceremony didn’t begin until 7 p.m., later than the originally planned 5 p.m. John was delayed because he couldn’t find his shirt, and since the historic First African Baptist Church, built in the 1800s, didn’t have electricity, they had to use candles.
