As a film buff, I’m already intrigued by this setup! It opens with a quirky little detail – our editor apparently had a string of exes named after British towns! Rhian from Rhyl, Teresa from Trent, and poor Brenda from Bradford, who now works at a slaughterhouse – talk about a life change! But the real story begins with a boat called ‘Rose of Nevada‘. A fisherman in a sad little Cornish village finds it docked, and it’s a shock because it vanished in a huge storm thirty years ago! He immediately tells the widow of one of the men lost at sea, and her reaction isn’t relief, it’s a really unsettling feeling that something bad is about to happen. It’s a fantastic hook, honestly.
It doesn’t take long for him to find a way to get the boat working again, and he hires a seasoned captain, along with two crew members: thoughtful Nick (George Mackay) and Liam (Callum Turner), who likes to drink and chat with the fisherman’s daughter—she even gives him her father’s old cap to wear while working. The message ‘Get off the boat now’ scratched below deck should have been a clear warning sign.
After a few days at sea, Liam and Nick return with a boatload of fish, only to discover their village has somehow traveled back in time thirty years. The townspeople simply assume they are the two men who disappeared long ago. Liam adapts surprisingly well, even moving in with the mother of the girl who gave him a cap. However, Nick is deeply disturbed and struggles to understand what has happened or how they ended up in this strange situation.
Mark Jenkin’s film, Rose of Nevada, is instantly recognizable thanks to his unique filmmaking style. He shoots on 16mm film, develops it himself, and intentionally leaves in scratches and imperfections. The dialogue is added later, and the film features long, atmospheric shots of things like old boat parts, heavy rain, and wind-swept branches – all hallmarks of his work.
Jenkin’s films are uniquely his own – no other filmmaker creates experiences quite like them. His work is atmospheric and strange, often feeling unsettling, claustrophobic, and even thought-provoking, but it’s also captivating. You’ll likely find yourself thinking about the film long after it ends.
