It appears that recent rumors about Indiana Jones returning to the big screen may have been premature, as it seems the revival of the adventure series is not a top priority for Lucasfilm at the moment. According to Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, the studio is focusing on finalizing the schedule for future Star Wars films and preparing for a leadership transition since Kathleen Kennedy is planning to step down from her position. Once these issues are resolved, there might be plans to reintroduce the iconic archaeologist character.
According to Sneider (via LRM Online), it’s almost certain that Indiana Jones will be rebooted in the future, but not anytime soon. Fans eagerly waiting for an announcement at D23 next year might want to relax, as it won’t happen. Currently, Lucasfilm is concentrating on fixing the Star Wars franchise on the big screen, and Kathleen Kennedy is preparing to pass her responsibilities to two of her deputies. No one is considering Indiana Jones or deciding who should play him at this point. My apologies to Glen Powell, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal.
More recently, whispers about a fresh start for Indiana Jones sparked excitement, suggesting that Disney might unveil a new venture during their D23 Expo next year. Given the ongoing value of this franchise, it’s likely they wouldn’t want to keep it idle for extended periods. This proposed project is said to be a complete reboot, meaning it would revolve around a new actor stepping into Harrison Ford’s shoes.
The latest installment in the Indiana Jones series, titled “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate”, premiered in cinemas in June 2023. Although it received mostly favorable critiques, it failed to perform well financially, earning a global total of $383.9 million, while its production costs ranged between $295-387 million. Director James Mangold expressed disappointment upon observing the film’s divisive reception, expressing hope that audiences would have connected more with the movie’s themes revolving around aging and finding closure.
The current situation regarding Indiana Jones’ future appearances on the big screen is somewhat perplexing due to conflicting reports. Although it’s likely that Disney may eventually consider reviving such a successful franchise, it seems sensible for them to prioritize other projects at present. Given that Star Wars has proven to be much more profitable than any other Lucasfilm franchise, with four of the five recent films surpassing the $1 billion mark globally, it’s clear that there is greater potential for storytelling opportunities within the Star Wars universe. Unlike Indiana Jones, which relies heavily on its central character, Star Wars offers a wide range of tales that can be set in the distant galaxy. Therefore, it appears crucial for Lucasfilm to focus on developing a strategy for future Star Wars movies first.
It could be argued that the Indiana Jones series should take a break and not return for some time. Unlike characters such as James Bond or Batman who have been played by various actors over the years, Indiana Jones, portrayed brilliantly by Harrison Ford in five films, has become synonymous with his role. Finding an actor capable of filling Ford’s shoes would be no small feat. Even if a suitable successor is found, there is no guarantee that the film will be successful. For now, it may be best to leave Indiana Jones on the sidelines and let the series rest.
