The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie is generating excitement, and rumors suggest it will introduce some new characters. While these characters will be new to the film, they’re all well-known figures from the popular Super Mario video games.
A movie synopsis leaked online before Nintendo’s official trailer was released, revealing new characters in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The synopsis, shared on Instagram by the Cinepolis El Salvador cinema, indicates Chris Pratt will reprise his role as Mario. According to a translation of the post, the movie will feature Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi teaming up to fight against Wario and Bowser Jr., facing “new threats, old rivalries, and a battle that reaches the stars.” The post also included the first official teaser for the sequel.
Bowser Jr., voiced by Bennie Safdie, will appear in the new film. As the son of Bowser (Jack Black), who was defeated in the first movie, it’s natural he’d return to try and rescue his father. The trailer shows him as a key villain, now that Mario and Luigi have captured Bowser.
Nintendo recently shared a new trailer spotlighting Yoshi and his important role as Mario’s friend in the movie. While Yoshi, Mario’s dinosaur companion, wasn’t in the main film, a Yoshi egg appeared at the very end, suggesting he’d be back. The new trailer reveals how Mario discovers and befriends a frightened Yoshi in a location from the Mario Odyssey video game. The character is both cute and comedic, and promises to be a standout part of the movie.
Wario hasn’t been featured in any previews for the new movie, which many fans found surprising given his absence from The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Actor Pedro Pascal has even been suggested as someone who could play him. While Wario isn’t part of the Super Mario Galaxy storyline, he’s a well-known and popular character within the entire Super Mario universe, so his appearance would still be a fun surprise.
Polygon reports that Everyman Cinemas, a London-based chain, released a movie description suggesting a new villain will appear. While not as direct as the description from Cinepolis, it states that after defeating Bowser and saving Brooklyn, Mario will face a team-up of Wario and Bowser Jr. and must stop them from taking over the world, with help from his friends and Yoshi.
In a 2023 interview, Jack Black talked about the possibility of Pedro Pascal voicing the character Wario in a future movie, playfully suggesting, “Wario! Pedro Pascal is Wario!”
Rosalina is joining the movie franchise as a new character, though she’s already well-known from the Super Mario Galaxy video games. Fans were excited to see her in the trailer. The trailer also features Birdo, the popular pink creature, but it’s currently unclear whether she’ll just make a brief appearance or play a bigger role in the film.
Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures planned a sequel. Chris Pratt voiced Mario, a casting decision that some fans questioned, feeling his voice didn’t quite match the iconic character. Charlie Day provided the voice for Mario’s brother, Luigi.
Anya Taylor-Joy and Seth Rogen lent their voices to Princess Peach and Donkey Kong in the new Super Mario movie—the first major film adaptation since the 1993 live-action version. Charles Martinet, who famously voiced Mario and Luigi for years, also made a special appearance as their father, Giuseppe.
Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics (with a 59% score on Rotten Tomatoes), The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge financial success, earning $1.361 billion worldwide. The film also received recognition in the form of three Golden Globe nominations and a Saturn Award nomination. A sequel is already in development, confirmed by Illumination in March 2024.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Promises Deep Cuts
The new movie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is based on the 2007 video game and brings back the directing team of Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. Keegan Michael-Key and Kevin Michael Richardson reprise their roles as Toad and Kamek, respectively. The trailer reveals a scene where Bowser Jr., looking imposing, demands Mario and Luigi free his father. It also features plenty of action with Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and other characters exploring different worlds throughout space, including some locations from the Mario Odyssey game.
The video game Super Mario Galaxy follows Mario on a journey through space to rescue Princess Peach and protect the universe, with players eventually unlocking Luigi as a playable character. This story is also the basis for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which was officially announced with its title during a Nintendo Direct presentation on September 12th.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens in theaters on April 1, 2026.
