Rumour: Assassin’s Creed 4 Remake Makes Big Changes, Drops Modern Day Story and Adds RPG Elements

Everyone’s been talking about the upcoming remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, and it seems it won’t just be a visual update. Reports suggest the game will feature significant changes to how it plays.

Okay, so I’m hearing from Jeux Vidéo Magazine that Ubisoft is seriously rethinking the story in the next Assassin’s Creed. Apparently, they’re ditching the modern-day stuff altogether and focusing entirely on Edward Kenway’s adventures – more story for him, which sounds awesome! From what I understand, gameplay is going to feel more like the recent AC games, but they’re adding in RPG stuff like loot drops and stats for Edward’s weapons and armor. Basically, it’s looking like a blend of classic Assassin’s Creed and some good old-fashioned RPG grinding – I’m definitely excited about that!

The game’s overall map size will be the same as the first game, but the islands you sail to will have more things to do and extra quests. Plus, you’ll be able to switch seamlessly between sailing your ship and exploring islands without any loading screens.

According to recent reports, the remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is planned for release in early 2026, though the launch date could potentially be pushed back later in the year.

This report confirms earlier hints that the project is a substantial overhaul, not just a visual upgrade. Previous reports suggested new gameplay features and expanded mechanics for combat, animals, and the environment. Rumors about a remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag have been circulating since summer 2023, and Ubisoft has acknowledged they are working on a remake of one of their older titles.

Last year, Ubisoft’s CEO, Yves Guillemot, announced the company is planning remakes of some of its older titles. He explained this is a way to update and improve those games, as they still contain compelling and detailed worlds, particularly within the Assassin’s Creed series.
