Following the unpredictable fate brought about by Rooster Teeth’s closure, RWBY has officially revealed that Volume 10 is underway, having secured a new platform with VIZ Media. As someone who’s been along for the ride since the beginning and even recalls the early trailers dropping, I can empathize with fellow fans – it hasn’t always been an easy journey for this series. The series’ turbulent past isn’t due to any one individual’s mistakes, but rather a string of bad luck and adverse situations. With this fresh start, I yearn for the show to rectify one key aspect that has bothered me throughout its run.
If you’ve been tuning into the series since its debut, you’re aware it hasn’t always been smooth sailing behind the scenes. The sudden closure of Rooster Teeth presented a challenging hurdle, but it’s heartening that VIZ Media stepped in to continue the show. We’ve faced some tough times, including the untimely passing of RWBY’s creator, Monty Oum, during the series’ run. Yet, the show has managed to persevere. I hope that one of its persistent issues gets tackled in Volume 10 and subsequent volumes.
RWBY Has a Pacing Problem

In simpler terms, the pace of RWBY has been uneven from the start. Initially, I was more forgiving because each episode was shorter and there was a lot to establish – characters, their world, and plotlines. With limited time each week, it’s challenging not to rush certain sections to fit everything in.
Despite the fact that pacing issues in newer seasons seem more pronounced and harder to ignore, one reason for this could be the inconsistent episode lengths. In contrast to traditional shows where episodes usually run for about the same duration, RWBY‘s varying episode lengths appear to contribute to the pacing problems. Establishing a fixed timeframe for each episode would likely be an effective initial step towards improving the flow. Working within a predetermined time limit helps creators learn how to maximize their time and adapt to it, leading to greater consistency in the final product, even if it requires more effort at times.
Improving the Balance of Setting and Plot

Currently, it seems that the recent seasons are spending more effort on establishing the locations they’re set in because the characters are primarily traveling to engage Salem’s forces. I believe Volume 9 dedicated the most time to building the world where the season is set, and this decision may not have been advantageous. This volume unfolds within a world that Team RWBY are familiar with due to a fairy tale in their own universe. Consequently, significant time is spent delving into the origin of this fairy tale and utilizing it as a map to find the exit and return home.
I appreciate the idea behind Volume 9, but I feel it didn’t get the attention it deserved due to time constraints. The task of managing worldbuilding, plot advancement, and character development simultaneously was quite challenging given the limited number of episodes and their duration. This volume is particularly noteworthy because it showcases the mounting stress and despair from earlier volumes, especially on Ruby, who bears the double burden of being the team leader and one of the remaining Silver-Eyed Warriors capable of combating Salem.
Instead of providing an opportunity for a deep exploration of Blake and Yang’s emotional growth by establishing their relationship, the narrative seemed to prioritize this aspect at the expense of Ruby’s emotional journey, which was largely sidelined throughout many episodes before being hurriedly resolved in the last few. Weiss, as Ruby’s partner, is also underutilized in these emotional developments, delivering a lackluster performance. Consequently, the emotional growth experiences are compressed into a brief timeframe, and they fail to resonate as strongly as they potentially could have.
It seems more effective to divide the ninth volume of the series into two separate volumes, although I acknowledge there might be behind-the-scenes reasons for starting it slowly before packing in most of the action at the end. If this is the situation, I hope VIZ provides the RWBY team with sufficient time and resources to maximize the show’s potential.
