Ryan Gosling is having a fantastic month! He’s the lead in Project Hail Mary, a movie getting incredible reviews and a lot of buzz before it comes out on March 20th. As part of the final push to promote the film, they’re highlighting Gosling’s personality and appeal. Interestingly, they’re also revisiting one of his older movies to correct an error he’s been wanting to fix for ten years.
To promote the movie Project Hail Mary, a new poster was released that playfully references the film La La Land. The poster mimics the famous La La Land image of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone dancing in Los Angeles, but instead of Stone, Gosling is now pictured dancing with Rocky, the alien from Hail Mary. The two characters form an unexpected and heartwarming friendship, and the new poster shows them dancing – a surprising and fun image shared on the movie’s official X account.

Beyond just being a charming image, the new poster cleverly corrects a detail that bothered Ryan Gosling about the original movie. He always felt he should have held his hand straight in one particular scene, but he’d angled it downwards, thinking it looked better. He even admitted in a 2024 interview with WSJ Magazine that the hand position has “haunted” him. A video, posted on the Project Hail Mary X account, shows him finally getting the chance to fix it.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of La La Land, Ryan Gosling playfully edited the movie poster with a little help from a fan nicknamed Rocky – and some iconic jazz hands! He called it #ProjectHailMary.

In the video, he jokingly refers to a specific move as his last-ditch effort to correct a recurring issue with his technique. He asks for feedback on his hand position while performing it, and the crowd celebrates when he successfully executes the move.
Project Hail Mary Is Set To Be One Of Ryan Gosling’s Best Movies To Date

I have to say, the new poster, clearly channeling La La Land, is just the latest win for what’s been a fantastic marketing push for this film. There was some early grumbling that the trailers gave away too much about Rocky, but honestly, it’s become clear that the connection between the characters is the core of the story, and that’s a good thing. What’s really impressed me is how perfectly the marketing has balanced the film’s tone – we get a sense of the humor in Gosling’s performance, but also the truly massive stakes. For those who haven’t heard, the movie centers around Gosling being given a nearly impossible, last-ditch effort – a “Hail Mary” – to save the planet from a mysterious threat that’s causing the sun to fade.
Currently, the movie has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the best score of Ryan Gosling’s career. It’s slightly ahead of Drive (93%) and La La Land (91%). Spencer Perry from ComicBook even called it “the first science-fiction masterpiece of 2026” in his review. He specifically praised Gosling’s performance as Oscar-worthy, noting that it showcases his impressive range and proves he’s a truly compelling actor.
It’s still uncertain if Project Hail Mary will earn Ryan Gosling an Oscar, especially with strong competition expected next year from actors like Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, and Timothée Chalamet. However, it’s already clear that this is one of his strongest performances, much like his work in La La Land. He’s transitioned from the glamorous world of musicals to the vastness of space, but continues to deliver captivating performances, and this role seems perfectly suited to him.
Project Hail Mary hits theaters on March 20th, 2026.
