Last week saw the debut of the initial trailer for “Project Hail Mary,” and judging by the viewership numbers, it appears that this film, starring Ryan Gosling, is off to an incredible beginning. The movie, adapted from the beloved bestselling novel by Andy Weir with the same title, has already shattered a highly impressive record, even though its release date isn’t until 2026.
On Wednesday, Phil Lord, a co-director, shared that the debut trailer for Project Hail Mary garnered an astonishing 400 million views within a week. This makes it the most-viewed trailer for an original movie that isn’t a sequel or remake in history. To celebrate this impressive feat, Lord unveiled a fresh image of Ryan Gosling from the upcoming film.
Wow, what a fantastic achievement! A heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you movie/book enthusiasts, space travel aficionados, solar energy supporters, and everyone in between, for propelling the Project Hail Mary trailer past an astounding 400 million views within a week. This is an unprecedented feat for an original non-sequel, non-remake film trailer! I can hardly wait to…

Additionally, he hinted about the movie’s appearance at San Diego Comic-Con later this month, a gathering where Ryan Gosling, the leading actor, along with directors Lord & Chris Miller, Weir, and the scriptwriter Drew Goddard will be present. For enthusiasts of the widely acclaimed book attending San Diego Comic-Con, there are “a few other exciting developments” promised by Lord, although he remained tight-lipped about the specifics regarding what Amazon MGM Studios has prepared for the film and its supporters at the upcoming event.
In “Project Hail Mary,” astronaut Ryland Grace, portrayed by Ryan Gosling, finds himself on a spaceship, far from his home planet, with no recollection of who he is or the mission he’s been assigned. He’s also uncertain about how to carry out his task. All he can confirm is that he’s been in a deep sleep for an extended period. As the last man alive on his mission, Grace must gradually recall his past and remember his objective while battling an existential threat to humanity. The film also features Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub in significant roles.
This movie is the second film adaptation by Weir, following the hugely successful adaptation of The Martian starring Matt Damon. That movie was a massive hit for 20th Century Fox, earning an impressive $630 million globally on a budget of $108 million. Critics loved it too, giving it a Fresh rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with many praising it as a smart adaptation that was both thrilling and humorous. Just a year after the official publication of Project Hail Mary in May 2021, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (now Amazon MGM Studios) obtained the rights to the book.
The film version of “Project Hail Mary” originates from the pair responsible for the successful Sony-produced “Spider-Verse” films, Phil Lord and Chris Miller. They’ve collaborated with beloved screenwriter Drew Goddard, who has written adaptations such as “The Martian” and worked on projects like “The Cabin in the Woods” and “Cloverfield”. “Project Hail Mary” is being produced by Amy Pascal, Gosling, Lord, Miller, Weir, Aditya Sood, and Rachel O’Connor. Additionally, Goddard, Patricia Whitcher, Lucy Kitada, Nikki Baida, Sarah Esberg, and Ken Kao serve as executive producers for the project.
The movie adaptation of Amazon MGM Studio’s “Project Hail Mary,” based on Andy Weir’s novel, is set to premiere in theaters on March 20, 2026. If you want to read the book before watching the film, it’s currently available for purchase at any bookstore.
