Ryan Murphy’s Monster Is Returning For Season 4, And I’m Already Scared (In A Good Way)

Ryan Murphy, the creator of the Monster series, is tackling the story of Lizzie Borden, the infamous 19th-century murderer, in the next season, which will stream on Netflix. Previous seasons have focused on well-known criminals like Jeffrey Dahmer, the Menendez Brothers, and Ed Gein. The series appears to be moving towards cases from further in the past, and I’m particularly intrigued by the Lizzie Borden story because I’m not very familiar with the details. Here’s a rundown of everything we know about the upcoming season.

When Will Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story Premiere?

Netflix hasn’t announced a release date yet, but filming is currently happening. Because of this, the show won’t be available in 2025, though it’s likely to be released within the next year or so.

The show’s third season, focusing on Ed Gein, was released in September 2025, roughly a year after the season about the Menendez brothers. The first season, which told the story of Jeffrey Dahmer, premiered in September 2022. Based on this pattern, we can likely expect the next season to arrive in either September or October of 2026.

Who Is Starring In The Lizzie Borden Story?

Season 4 of Monster features a cast made up of both familiar faces from Ryan Murphy’s other shows and actors new to his projects. Interestingly, a few performers from Season 3, which focused on Ed Gein, are also returning.

Ella Beatty

Murphy frequently collaborates with actors he’s worked with previously, and this show is no exception. Ella Beatty will play Lizzie Borden, having previously appeared in Murphy’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. Beatty’s recent work includes the A24 film If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, where she starred alongside Conan O’Brien and Rose Byrne.

Charlie Hunnam

Charlie Hunnam, who previously appeared in Season 3 of Monster as Ed Gein – a notorious killer and grave robber – and received critical acclaim for his performance, will be joining the cast. He’s set to play Andrew Borden, Lizzie’s father and one of the two people she was accused of killing, along with her stepmother.

Rebecca Hall

Rebecca Hall will play Lizzie’s stepmother. She’s well-known for her role as Vicky in the film Vicky Cristina Barcelona, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Hall is also starring in the 2025 movie Ella McCay, directed by James L. Brooks.

Vicky Krieps

Vicky Krieps is returning for Season 3 of Monster. She previously played Ilse Koch, a cruel figure from World War II, in The Ed Gein Story, and this time she’ll portray Bridget Sullivan, the Borden family’s maid. Sullivan was a crucial witness in Lizzie Borden’s murder trial, where Borden was found not guilty, and was also portrayed by Kristen Stewart in the 2018 film Lizzie.

Billie Lourd

Billie Lourd, known for her work on American Horror Story, will play Emma Borden, the sister of Lizzie Borden. Lourd has collaborated with the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, on seven seasons of American Horror Story, taking on roles like Linda Kasabian in a Manson Family-themed episode.

Jessica Barden

Actress Jessica Barden will play Nance O’Neil, a famous film star from the early 1900s, in an upcoming show. O’Neil became friends with Lizzie Borden shortly after Borden was found not guilty in her trial. People have often speculated that the two women were romantically involved, and the show will likely explore this possibility. The 2018 movie Lizzie also portrayed Borden and her maid as having a romantic relationship.

What Will The Show Be About?

The Lizzie Borden case is a famous and unsettling one. In 1892, her father and stepmother were brutally murdered with an axe. The subsequent trial in 1893 became a national sensation, often referred to as “the trial of the century.” What sets this case apart from those involving serial killers like Dahmer or Gein is that it centers around a single, shocking event – a double murder that occurred at one time.

As a true crime fan, and remembering how Monster handled the Menendez brothers, I’m expecting this show to really dig into what led up to the murders and then the whole trial. But here’s a big twist: Lizzie Borden was actually acquitted! And with Nance O’Neil being included as a character, it sounds like they’re going to explore what happened after the 1892 and 1893 events too, which is fascinating. She actually lived in Fall River, the same town where it all happened, until 1927!

That’s what we know so far, and we’ll continue to update this story as we get more information!
