Sakamoto Days Director Explains the Anime’s Changes Due to Fan Backlash (Exclusive)

The popular anime series Sakamoto Days is coming back on Netflix this week with the second half of its first season, and we had a chance to chat with the director about some improvements they’ve made for the upcoming episodes. The manga by Yuto Suzuki, which appears in Weekly Shonen Jump, has been eagerly awaited due to its spectacular action scenes. However, the reception to the anime so far hasn’t been overwhelmingly positive as fans feel that something has been misinterpreted during its adaptation into an animated series. Nonetheless, those involved recognize this feedback and are making adjustments accordingly.

During a chat with Masaki Watanabe, the director of Sakamoto Days, at Anime Expo 2025 this month, ComicBook asked about his thoughts on the audience’s reactions to the anime so far. Watanabe shared that the team behind the series has taken note of the criticisms aimed at Season 1’s Part 1 and has disclosed some adjustments they’ve made for future episodes, in response to fan feedback.

Sakamoto Days Director Reacts to Anime Fan Backlash

Responding to queries about fan reactions to Part 1 of “Sakamoto Days”, director Masaki Watanabe disclosed that he was aware of how viewers felt about specific elements of the show. He even mentioned the influence of the color scheme, acknowledging that some found it too bright, and expressed a desire for more mature tones. Consequently, they took these comments and feedback into account, striving to enhance certain aspects for the second season. Regarding the creative process behind action scenes in the series, Watanabe elaborated on their thoughtful planning.

Essentially, Watanabe stated that they aim to preserve the original’s rhythm as a foundation, then enhance what’s not explicitly shown – the gaps between frames or images. This additional content usually serves to ensure an appropriate emotional flow in the action sequence. Lastly, they determine the optimal length for this enhanced footage.

Sakamoto Days Director Teases Part 2

Regarding the upcoming aspects of Sakamoto Days Part 2, Watanabe hinted at enhancements taking place behind the scenes by pointing out the team’s increased familiarity with drawing and animating the series. “I believe their animation is growing even more stylish for the second season,” he said. “I hope everyone looks forward to these visual improvements, as well as the color palette of the show.

In the second part of Sakamoto Days, you’ll notice a more mature color palette and enhanced battle scenes – indications that the team has listened closely to fan feedback in refining their work. Starting July 14th, you can catch all the action on Netflix, with episodes being released weekly, featuring both Japanese and English audio options.
