As an analyst, I’ve been following the discussions around OpenAI’s potential revenue streams. Last year, reports surfaced suggesting they were considering adding ads to ChatGPT, largely fueled by concerns about the company’s financial stability. While CEO Sam Altman didn’t explicitly deny these claims, he framed advertising as something they’d only pursue if absolutely necessary – a real last resort.
The executive stated that while OpenAI hasn’t ruled out advertising completely, they personally dislike ads and find the combination of ads and artificial intelligence particularly concerning.
Recent reports indicate OpenAI is experimenting with displaying ads inside ChatGPT. Currently, ChatGPT is available for free, which sets it apart from competitors like Google Search and Bing that heavily feature advertisements.
OpenAI offers paid ChatGPT subscriptions with enhanced features. These include access to the latest models like GPT-5, unlimited messaging and file uploads, and broader use of Sora 1 for video creation. Prices range from $5 per month for ChatGPT Go to $200 per month for ChatGPT Pro.
Evidence suggests OpenAI is planning to add advertisements to ChatGPT. Code discovered in the Android app’s beta version (1.2025.329) included references to ad features, search ads, and sponsored content, indicating these features are under development.
This update isn’t available to everyone yet, but it strongly suggests the company is preparing to add ads to the tool.
The news follows a report from The Information suggesting OpenAI is thinking about adding ads to ChatGPT, potentially based on what users discuss or their past interactions. If they do, OpenAI could uniquely capitalize on ChatGPT’s popularity to make money.
OpenAI is facing financial hurdles as it works to stay ahead in the fast-moving world of artificial intelligence. They’re investing heavily in things like data centers, skilled employees, and the powerful computers needed to run their AI.
A new report indicates the company isn’t on a clear track to become profitable by 2030. And even if it does, OpenAI would need to invest another $207 billion to continue its innovative work and stay ahead.
