Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe took over Hollywood, Sam Raimi changed the game with his Spider-Man movies. Starting in 2002, he showed that comic book films could be both critically acclaimed and huge box office hits. The trilogy earned billions of dollars and set the standard for blockbuster action movies of the early 2000s. However, a fourth movie never happened. In 2010, disagreements over the story and which villains to include – like the Vulture – led to the project being canceled and a completely new series starring Andrew Garfield being made instead. This meant the original Spider-Man story was left incomplete.
I was reading an interview with Sam Raimi, and he basically said that Marvel’s doing really well with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and his connections to the Avengers, so he doesn’t want to mess with that success just to bring his own version back. But he would love to direct another Spider-Man movie if the opportunity ever came up! Honestly, just hearing him say he wants to do it is enough for me – it gives me hope that we might see his take on Spider-Man again someday. It’s all I need to get excited!
The Timing Is Actually Perfect for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4

Although Sam Raimi is careful not to upset the current success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, now is the best time to make Spider-Man 4. Tobey Maguire’s return as Peter Parker in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home was a huge cultural moment, proving audiences still strongly connect with that version of the character. The film also made nearly $2 billion in theaters, clearly showing that different Spider-Man actors can appear together without hurting the franchise. Plus, the Multiverse Saga storyline naturally allows for revisiting older storylines and characters alongside the main MCU narrative.
Sony’s efforts to create a shared universe centered around Spider-Man’s villains haven’t been consistently successful, with these spin-off films failing to reach the same critical and financial levels as the main Spider-Man movies. Because of this, bringing back director Sam Raimi and actor Tobey Maguire from the original 2002 films could be a safe bet for a box office hit. It would offer a high-quality alternative to the currently struggling spin-offs. Plus, Raimi recently directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for Marvel Studios and is in talks to direct Doctor Strange 3, showing he has a good working relationship with Marvel’s Kevin Feige. This makes it easier than ever for Sony and Disney to collaborate on a project.
The upcoming Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will hit theaters on July 31st.
