While James Cameron’s Avatar movies and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have both produced some of the highest-grossing films ever made, actor Sam Worthington believes there’s a significant difference between the two franchises. In a recent interview, he explained that the Avatar films allow for more creative risk-taking compared to the Marvel superhero movies.
Sam Worthington explains how Avatar franchise is different from MCU
Sam Worthington, known for his role in Clash of the Titans, recently shared that the Avatar films experience less outside scrutiny during their creation compared to Marvel movies.
Sam Worthington explained to The Independent that making their films feels like creating an independent movie. They aren’t pressured by expectations from the studio, the media, or fans, which allows them to be more creative and take bigger risks.
The 49-year-old actor explained that the filming process wasn’t rushed or pressured by the studio. They had the freedom to experiment and be creative, which many people don’t realize. Some assume the director, Jim, is very strict and instructional, but he’s actually more like an artist who enjoys exploring different ideas.
I’ve been watching these blockbuster franchises for years, and it’s amazing to see how both Avatar and Marvel have become the biggest forces in movies right now. It’s incredible that the first Avatar film still holds the record for the highest-grossing movie of all time – it made almost $3 billion worldwide! No other film has been able to top that yet.
In 2019, Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame almost broke the box office record, ultimately earning nearly $2.8 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, making it the second highest-grossing film of all time.
The three Avatar films have earned a total of $6.7 billion in theaters worldwide. Eleven Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies have also each grossed over $1 billion globally, and the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine is expected to join that group in 2024.
