Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer were disappointed to learn over the weekend that Hulu has cancelled the planned revival series, even after a pilot episode was filmed. The show’s return was unexpected to begin with, and the cancellation is even more surprising. Given how much streaming services rely on established franchises, many assumed the revival would definitely move forward.
Gellar hadn’t previously discussed the cancellation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, but she recently explained the reasons in an interview with People magazine. She shared that she found out the news just before the premiere of her film, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, at SXSW. She then talked about working on the revival with director Chloé Zhao, and revealed that one particular executive made the final decision to cancel it.
Nobody anticipated the challenges we faced, even at Searchlight Pictures. One of their executives openly disliked the original series, constantly pointing out he’d never finished watching it and wasn’t interested. This was incredibly difficult, considering how much Buffy meant to both Chloé and me, and to fans worldwide. From the very beginning, we were fighting an uphill battle when someone in charge was so vocal about their lack of interest in the source material.
Gellar didn’t reveal the executive’s name, but according to Deadline, it was Craig Erwich, the President of Disney Television Group who manages Hulu Originals.
What Else Has Been Revealed About The Cancelled Buffy Revival

Despite the show being cancelled, Sarah Michelle Gellar shared warm memories of her time on the series in a recent interview with People magazine. She explained that she had previously been firmly against a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival, as she told ComicBook, but she was impressed by the new showrunner’s enthusiasm and ideas. She described it as ‘like stepping back in time’ and fondly recalled the experience of filming the pilot episode.
Chloé and I had a lot of easy conversations. Being on set was chaotic but exciting – it felt like we were really making something happen. I especially liked the contrast between the new Slayer, who was just starting out like Buffy was in the first season, and the more experienced Slayer we saw later on.
The Buffy actress also praised the new Slayer, Ryan Kiera Armstrong. She expressed sadness that Armstrong won’t get the chance to fully explore the role, calling her a “superstar” and saying she’s “gutted that audiences won’t get to see her as the Slayer.”
The first episode of the planned Buffy: New Sunnydale series likely won’t be released, but Deadline has shared more information about it. According to the publication, the initial version—which only featured Buffy briefly at the end—was revised because the streaming service felt it didn’t suit their target audience and seemed geared toward a younger demographic. Changes were made to adjust the overall tone and give Buffy a more central role, as explained by Nellie Antreeva, Editor-in-Chief of Deadline.
The latest draft of the script is reportedly 90 minutes long and leans towards more mature themes, with a greater focus on the character of Buffy Gellar. It feels more suited for a streaming service than traditional network television. Sources say the rewrite was positively received by both 20th Television and Searchlight Pictures, leading to discussions about moving forward with the project. One executive is even strongly advocating for it, potentially risking significant resources to get it made.
Antreeva also points out that it’s unclear why Erwich decided against reviving the show. Some sources suggest it was due to budget concerns, while others believe it wouldn’t have lived up to the quality of the original.
The future of Buffy the Vampire Slayer remains uncertain. While Hulu is reportedly still interested in creating a new series, it’s unclear if that will happen. Whether Sarah Michelle Gellar would be involved is a separate question. She’s repeatedly stated she doesn’t want to reprise her role, and was only drawn back for a project specifically envisioned by Joss Whedon. Considering this, it seems unlikely she’d return for a different take on the show, but as we know, anything is possible.
I was excited about the revival mostly because of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s participation. Buffy is a truly iconic and important show, and her involvement is the best way to honor its legacy. I hope she’ll be part of any future attempts, though it might be a while before we see another revival.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is available to stream on Hulu.
