Housemarque and Sony have released new gameplay footage of Saros, their upcoming bullet-hell roguelite shooter and the follow-up to Returnal. IGN showed off the first area, Shattered Rise, running on a standard PS5 in 4K at 60 frames per second. The gameplay follows the main character, Arjun Devraj, as he tries to discover what happened to the Echelon Colony.
Similar to Returnal, Saros lets you improve your initial weapon and discover new ones, such as the Tactical and Smart Rifles, each offering special advantages. You’ll also find various Artifacts that help you survive – for example, Fatal Drain 1 restores your health with each enemy defeated. These artifacts also provide passive bonuses, increasing things like resource gain or your maximum health.
Just like before, you’ll build up Adrenaline by defeating enemies without taking damage. Adrenaline increases your melee damage and offers other advantages. However, Arjun now has a special shield that absorbs blue bullets, using them to power his powerful Prominence weapon. When you activate Eclipse, the environment changes, and enemies fire corrupted projectiles that lower your maximum health. Using Prominence will remove this corruption, but it won’t restore your health, so you’ll need to rely on healing to stay alive.
Okay, so I just discovered something awesome! When you fight the first boss, you get to see Second Chance in action. Basically, if Arjun takes a hit that should kill him, he doesn’t! He comes back to life, though he’s not completely healed. It gives you just enough of a boost to keep fighting and finally take down the boss, which is a lifesaver!
Saros is set on the planet Carcosa, which is facing a dangerous Eclipse. This Eclipse is causing the planet’s creatures to mutate and can even trigger events that threaten to destroy the world. Similar to the game Returnal, dying isn’t permanent, and each playthrough will reveal more about what happened to the planet’s colonists. Saros will be released on PS5 on April 30th.
