Saros Includes Multiple Save Slots and the Option to Suspend a Run

As a huge fan of Housemarque, I’m so excited about Saros! Everything I’ve seen so far shows it’s a really big step up from Returnal. But if you played Returnal and found it brutally hard, don’t worry! It looks like Housemarque is making Saros a little more forgiving, while still making sure that those of us who love a tough game can still get that challenge we want.

According to creative director Gregory Louden, players enjoyed Returnal and the direction the game was heading. However, feedback indicated many players wanted to progress further into the game. The team responded by adding options to adjust the difficulty, ensuring the game remained challenging while also being more accessible to a wider audience.

As a huge fan of Returnal, I’m loving all the quality-of-life improvements! Besides the awesome Second Chance system that lets you recover from a hit, and the fact that you keep getting stronger between runs, they’ve also added a way to suspend your run. It’s fantastic! If something comes up in real life, you can just pause the game and pick up exactly where you left off later. It’s a game-changer, especially for those of us with busy lives, and it wasn’t even in the game at launch – they really listened to the community!

The game’s design also focuses on relatively short play sessions – around 30 minutes each. Mitja Roskaric, the design director, explains that the goal is to ensure players always gain something, even if they fail. He believes shorter runs allow for more frequent learning opportunities. The team found 30 minutes to be the ideal length to balance challenge and the ability to learn from each attempt.

Beyond that, the game allows players to have multiple save files. According to Roskaric, a key design goal was to avoid the issue players experienced in Returnal, where they had to delete saves to start new runs. Now, players can have several runs going simultaneously. This was considered crucial because the team understands people have busy lives and want the flexibility to pause and resume the game whenever they have time. Being able to pick up where you left off is a core part of the experience.

Because Saros has a more story-driven focus, Housemarque wants more players to enjoy it. Plus, if you prefer a tougher experience, you can disable features like Second Chance or permanent unlocks to make the game more challenging.

The action game Saros will be released on April 30th for PlayStation 5 and looks fantastic, running at 4K resolution with a smooth 60 frames per second, even on the standard PS5 console. While we’re waiting to learn how it will perform on the upcoming PS5 Pro, the game already uses the DualSense controller’s features – like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers – to create a truly immersive experience, similar to the game Returnal.
