Marvel enthusiasts are looking forward to the new Avengers movie, Avengers: Doomsday, which arrives in theaters December 18th. But before that, Spider-Man will return to the big screen with Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31st—and it promises to be just as thrilling. The movie is already generating buzz with mysteries, like the role Sadie Sink will play, and a trailer packed with intriguing villains, giving fans a lot to anticipate.
The trailer also showed Mark Ruffalo returning as Bruce Banner/the Hulk. Interestingly, this isn’t the same Hulk we’ve seen recently. The Hulk’s last appearances were in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Avengers: Endgame, which introduced a new version of the character. It seems that version is no longer around, and this change opens up the exciting possibility that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will finally tackle a long-standing problem with the Hulk.
Savage Hulk Is Returning In Brand New Day

Okay, so the Hulk’s coming back in Brand New Day, which is awesome! But what’s really got fans buzzing is that it’s the classic Savage Hulk we’re getting, not the Professor Hulk version. You remember, in Endgame they finally merged Bruce Banner and the Hulk into one being, which was cool, but it basically gave Hulk the body and Banner the brain. This new Brand New Day version is a return to the raw, powerful Hulk we all grew up with, and I, for one, am totally here for it!
The idea of Smart Hulk seemed promising, but audiences didn’t really connect with it – they preferred the more unpredictable and destructive Hulk they were used to. It didn’t help that the character was shown doing yoga in She-Hulk. In fact, Valkyrie even voiced what many fans were thinking, telling Hulk she liked his previous versions better.
It seems Marvel heard fan feedback and made a change! The trailer for Brand New Day shows that Savage Hulk will return, bringing his signature chaos to the new movie. This is great news for fans, and it also gives the MCU a chance to finally address the long-standing issue of how they’ve portrayed the Hulk.
Hulk Has Never Been Powerful Enough In The MCU

The Hulk is a fan-favorite Marvel character because he’s incredibly strong, easily angered, and known for his destructive outbursts – making him exciting to watch. Despite his immense power, he hasn’t always been portrayed as one of the strongest heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For a large part of the MCU, the Hulk hasn’t quite lived up to his full potential.
Fans were thrilled by Hulk’s initial powerful moments against Thanos and his army in Avengers: Infinity War. However, after a quick opening scene, Hulk largely disappeared from the film, with Banner instead piloting the Hulkbuster armor. This disappointed many who anticipated a major battle with a fully powered Hulk. The introduction of Smart Hulk in Endgame then further frustrated those who had hoped to see the original Hulk take on a larger role.
Even before the latest Avengers decisions, Hulk hasn’t felt as strong as he should. In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor actually proved to be a worthy opponent, and for a long time, Hulk’s story focused on Banner’s struggles with being the Hulk and his lack of control. There was also a strange, quickly abandoned storyline about a possible romance between Banner and Black Widow, but that’s a separate issue.
Brand New Day Can Finally Make The Hulk As Powerful As He Should Be

The introduction of Spider-Man’s ‘Brand New Day’ storyline creates an opportunity for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to reintroduce Savage Hulk, potentially showcasing his full strength and destructive capabilities. Hopefully, this will set up his return in future MCU films, provided he survives. While Hulk isn’t currently listed among the characters appearing in the upcoming ‘Doomsday’ project, it’s possible that information is intentionally misleading.
Killing off the Hulk in a Spider-Man movie would be a surprising and unwise move for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it’s likely we haven’t seen the last of him. This new film is a great chance for the MCU to finally address the long-standing issues with the Hulk character – and hopefully, they’ll seize that opportunity.
