The 2026 Cannes Film Festival is ready for its close-up.

Oh my gosh, it finally started! May 12th, and Cannes was absolutely buzzing! All my favorite stars descended on France for the opening ceremony – I seriously couldn’t breathe watching it all unfold! It’s just… everything I’ve been waiting for!

This year’s festival is attracting a lot of famous faces. The jury includes well-known actors and directors like Demi Moore, Stellan Skarsgård, Ruth Negga, and Chloé Zhao. Plus, many of the films competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or feature big-name stars.

I’m so excited for the premiere of Paper Tigers at the festival on May 16th! It’s a crime drama with an amazing cast – Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, and Miles Teller. And I’m also really looking forward to Fjord, which stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a couple moving to Norway; that one debuts on May 19th.

The iconic staircase leading up to the Palais des Festivals is the spot to see what celebrities are wearing. The Cannes Film Festival is famous for its formal dress code – men are expected to wear tuxedos, and women, evening gowns.

The festival website suggests several appropriate outfits, including a little black dress, a cocktail dress, or a dark pantsuit. You could also wear a dressy top with black pants. Elegant shoes or sandals are welcome – heels are optional, but sneakers are not. For men, a black or navy suit with a bow tie or dark tie is also a good choice.

This 12-day event has a stricter dress code than the recent Met Gala, specifically prohibiting revealing clothing and overly large or trailing outfits that could obstruct movement or seating in the theater.

As a stylist, I’ve definitely seen stars push boundaries over the years! We all remember when Bella Hadid made a statement by going braless on the red carpet in 2024, and Kristen Stewart really shook things up by ditching her shoes and going barefoot – a bold move that everyone was talking about!

The actress jokingly told The Hollywood Reporter last year that people often criticize women for not wearing heels, but she believes it’s unfair to expect that of them. She pointed out that if men aren’t expected to wear heels and dresses, then women shouldn’t be either.
