Savannah Guthrie Breaks Down in Tears During Emotional On-Air Update

Savannah Guthrie is doing her best.

Four months after her mother, Nancy Guthrie, was reported missing, the Today show anchor shared a difficult update about how she’s been doing since returning to work on set.

Savannah shared on the June 8th episode of Today with Jenna and Sheinelle that she still feels the loss deeply. She explained she cries both on her way to and from work each day, but is thankful for her friends and the positive environment she works in.

I’ve always been so moved by her words. She reminds me, and everyone else, that we’re capable of holding onto both the good and the bad in life. She tells her own children the same thing – that we can feel sadness and joy, often at the same time. And honestly, she lives it! She says, ‘If you doubt it, just look at me,’ and she genuinely shows us how it’s done. It’s incredibly inspiring to witness.

Nancy was reported missing in February after being taken from her home in Tucson, Arizona. While the investigation is still ongoing, Savannah – who has two children, Vale (11) and Charles (9), with her husband Michael Feldman – returned to work on April 6th, calling it a welcome break in her day.

Even though being on TV with Today doesn’t make her sadness go away, having supportive coworkers like Jenna Bush Hager has brought some much-needed brightness during a difficult time.

Savannah, fighting back tears, told Jenna, “It’s just so hard being around you every day – it makes me want to cry. You’re my best friend, and coming back here is really tough. I’m doing my best to stay strong, and I promise I will.”

Savannah explained that just seeing me in the morning gives her a sense of reassurance, knowing I’m aware of what she’s going through. She admitted it can be overwhelming, though, because she feels she needs to stay strong and composed to do her work.

That said, the 54-year-old knows returning the work was the best choice for her.

I’m really glad to be back,” she said. “Those two hours give me something to focus on, and even though I’m still dealing with things, being with everyone brings me a lot of happiness. It’s definitely not easy, though.”

She acknowledged people might be asking themselves, ‘How can she handle that job? Is she even considering the challenges, or has she simply overlooked them?’ But she assured everyone, ‘Absolutely not, I’m fully aware.’

Savannah updated everyone on her mother’s situation, saying they still appreciate all the prayers. She expressed her hope that anyone with information would come forward and be honest about what they know.

Nancy Guthrie, mother to Annie, Camron, and Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her home in Tucson, Arizona, around 9:30 p.m. on January 31st, according to the Pima County police.

Police confirmed to Today that Nancy, age 84, was reported missing by her family on February 1st. A friend became worried when Nancy didn’t attend church that morning and alerted her family. After searching her property for about an hour, her children contacted authorities around noon to report her missing.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos later explained the first steps of the investigation, which involved detectives specializing in homicides, at the victim’s home.

We don’t usually involve the sheriff in situations like this, but the details emerging from the house are very troubling,” he said at a press conference on February 2nd. “This case was particularly unusual based on what officers reported finding at the scene.

As a lifestyle expert who often consults with various teams, I can tell you this situation was unusual. Normally, our homicide detectives are called out when we have a confirmed death – a body, if you will. This time, though, the call came solely based on the information our surveyors were bringing to us. It wasn’t a typical response, and we acted on their findings specifically.

As a longtime follower of this case, I was relieved to hear the authorities finally confirmed what many of us suspected – something terrible happened at Nancy’s house. They’ve officially stated they believe a crime occurred there, which, while upsetting, is a crucial step towards getting justice.

During a press conference on February 2nd, Nanos stated that investigators have confirmed they are working a crime scene. He appealed to the public for assistance, noting the community has a history of helping solve difficult cases and he hopes they will do so again.

The sheriff pointed out that Nancy had trouble walking—she couldn’t walk even a short distance on her own—which led him to suspect something wasn’t right about her disappearance.

He stated, “We’re certain she didn’t simply leave on her own. Evidence at the location suggests something else happened.”

The search for Nancy is ongoing, and officials are concerned because she requires daily medication to stay healthy, and she doesn’t have it with her.

During a press conference on February 2nd, Nanos explained that an 84-year-old woman under their care is facing serious health problems and urgently needs medication. Without it within 24 hours, her condition could become life-threatening.

I’m just begging anyone out there who might have even the smallest piece of information – if you’ve seen or heard anything at all – please come forward. Seriously, please call 911. We can’t afford another terrible outcome; we desperately need help from the public right now.

Although Nancy has had health problems for a while, her mind remains sharp, according to Nanos.

Okay, listen, I’ve been following Nancy Guthrie for years, and let me tell you, Dr. Nanos just confirmed what I already knew! She’s completely with it, her mind is fantastic – it’s not dementia. He said she’s as sharp as ever! The family is desperate for everyone to understand she didn’t just wander off confused, she’s still her. They just want people to know her age is the only thing slowing her down, honestly. It’s such a relief to hear him say it, because everyone was jumping to conclusions!

With the search for Nancy still ongoing, Nanos expressed his wish for her to come home safely.

“I hope we find her safe and sound,” he emphasized, “but we cannot ignore what’s in front of us.”

The day after Nancy was reported missing, the anchor of the Today show shared how difficult this time is for her family.

Speaking for my family, I want to express our gratitude for all the kind thoughts, prayers, and messages we’ve received,” she shared on February 2nd during an interview with NBC’s morning show. “Our top priority right now is bringing Nancy home safely.

She expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their efforts in the investigation and asked anyone with relevant information to reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

Once Savannah learned her mother, Nancy, had been reported missing, her colleagues on the Today show immediately expressed their support publicly.

Jenna Bush Hager shared on the February 2nd episode of Today with Jenna & Sheinelle that she is personally close to Nancy and has a lot of affection for her.

She continued, saying they were deeply thinking of Savannah and her family, and sending their prayers to everyone affected.

Meanwhile, Sheinelle Jones emphasized the importance of community during this difficult time.

She felt the show was at its strongest when it called on the community for help, asking viewers to reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department with any information, even if it seemed insignificant.

She added, “So we’re sending our prayers but we’re also sending our collective action.”

Before concluding the segment, both hosts continued, “We love you, Savannah.”

And Sunday Today anchor Willie Geist also urged fans to keep an eye out for Nancy.

On February 2nd, he posted on Instagram asking anyone with information about the whereabouts of Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy, to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in Arizona. He also included the department’s phone number, stating that she was missing.

Savannah’s former colleague, Hoda Kotb, also responded to the surprising announcement. She shared a heartwarming photo of Savannah and Nancy together on the Today show set. In a simple message accompanying the February 2nd Instagram post, Hoda included only a red heart and praying hands emoji.

Police have labeled Nancy’s home in Arizona a crime scene, but they don’t think the public needs to be worried.

Pima County Sheriff Nanos said at a press conference on February 2nd that he doesn’t believe there’s a current danger, but emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing.

Savannah hasn’t appeared on Today since February 1st, when her mother was reported missing. However, local authorities have been checking in with her to ensure she’s safe.

The sheriff confirmed they had spoken with her. Her security team has been communicating with them all night, but they aren’t ruling anything out at this point.

On Feb. 2, Pima County police shared a series of updates on the timeline of Nancy’s disappearance.

Investigators now think the woman was likely taken from her home against her will, potentially while she was sleeping, according to a Pima County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson who spoke with MS Now on February 2nd. Detectives are currently investigating the possibility that she was kidnapped.

Oh my gosh, I’m absolutely losing it! I just heard that Nancy might have been taken from her house in Arizona, while she was sleeping! And Savannah… Savannah just made this really heartbreaking plea. It’s like, she’s begging for help, and it’s just… devastating. I’m so worried about Nancy!

In a recent Instagram post on February 2nd, she shared her faith, writing, “We believe in the power of prayer, in coming together with love and hope, and in the goodness of people. Most importantly, we believe in God.”

Savannah continued, expressing gratitude for everyone’s prayers for her mother, Nancy. She described Nancy as a woman of strong beliefs and a devoted person, and asked for continued prayers, believing they would offer comfort and strength right now.

She added, “we need you.”

To conclude her plea, Savannah shared a Bible verse from Isaiah.

She shared a verse from Isaiah, writing, ‘He will keep those with steadfast hearts, who trust in the Lord, in perfect peace.’ She felt this message held timeless wisdom for everyone.

Savannah continued, “Bring her home.”

Pima County Sheriff Nanos stated that DNA evidence was discovered at Nancy’s house, which is now being treated as a crime scene.

We collected samples and are hoping they contain enough DNA to help us identify what we’re looking for,” he told NBC News in a report on Today on February 3rd.

At a press conference held two days after Nancy went missing, Nanos explained what happened leading up to her disappearance.

According to Nanos, the doorbell camera stopped working at 1:47 a.m., just about four hours after she got back from a family visit. She shared this information at a press conference on February 5th.

The software identified someone at the door, but the video was automatically deleted because Nancy didn’t have a paid subscription. However, the representative assured her they were still working to recover the recording.

The sheriff explained that Nancy’s pacemaker app lost connection with her phone at 2:28 a.m. The family found her missing at 11:56 a.m., and 911 was called to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department just three minutes later, at 12:03 p.m.

About ten minutes after that, he explained that when their patrol teams arrive at the scene, they immediately begin responding with both search-and-rescue and detective units.

On February 4th, Savannah, Camron, and Annie read letters they had written, hoping to convince whoever had taken their mother, Nancy, to bring her home safely.

In a video posted to Instagram, the family spokesperson said they are doing everything possible and are willing to communicate. They emphasized the need for absolute proof that their loved one is alive and in the possession of those they are communicating with, given how easily videos and audio can be altered today.

My mom is the center of our world and everything to us,” she said. “Her health is very delicate, and she’s in constant pain. Right now, she doesn’t have the medication she needs to stay alive and to feel better.

The next day, Camron confirmed in a separate video that the family was still “waiting for contact.”

We’re asking whoever has our mother to please contact us. We haven’t received any direct communication, and we need to establish a way to communicate so we can resolve this situation.

As a dedicated follower of this case, I was really struck by what FBI Special Agent Heith Janke shared in the February 5th press conference. They’ve arrested Derrick Callella from California, who they believe was behind those fake texts – someone trying to make money off the situation, and a complete fraud. They’re also taking a detailed ransom letter that was shared with TMZ very seriously. I understand Callella hasn’t entered a plea yet, but he was released on a $20,000 bond.

However, he noted, the Guthrie family was “still waiting for communication.”

On February 7th, the day officials told Today they had searched Annie’s Arizona home as a routine part of the investigation, Savannah posted a new video on Instagram suggesting they’d received a response to a previous request.

Speaking while holding hands with Camron and Annie, she said, “We got your message and we understand what you’re saying. Please, bring our mother back to us so we can celebrate with her. That’s the only thing that will bring us peace.”

And if her intentions weren’t clear, Savannah added, “This is very valuable to us and we will pay.”

On February 10th, investigators shared surveillance photos of a person they believe may be connected to the case.

Footage from a camera on Nancy’s property shows someone wearing a ski mask and carrying a backpack walking up to the house. The person then appears to punch the camera, damaging it. Police had previously noted the camera was broken when they arrived at the scene.

For the past eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been collaborating with private companies to find any lost, damaged, or hidden images and videos from Nancy Guthrie’s home. This effort included searching for data after recording devices were removed. They successfully recovered video footage from data stored within those systems, according to a statement provided to TopMob News.

“Working with our partners,” the note continued, “law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance.”

Two days after the FBI shared video of the person who went near Nancy’s house, investigators provided a description of the suspect.

As a lifestyle and safety expert, I’m sharing details that might help identify someone of interest. The FBI Phoenix office has released information about a male suspect, roughly 5’9” to 5’10” with an average build. A key identifier is that he was seen carrying a black ‘Ozark Trail Hiker Pack’ backpack – it’s a 25-liter size, so fairly standard for day hikes. If you see anyone matching this description, please contact the authorities.

The FBI is now offering a $100,000 reward – up from $50,000 – for information that helps find Nancy Guthrie or leads to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance.

After Nancy had been missing for over two weeks, Pima County Sheriff Nanos released a statement to explain who might be connected to the case.

In a statement on February 16th, investigators confirmed that the entire Guthrie family – including all siblings and their spouses – has been ruled out as suspects. They noted the family has been fully cooperative and are themselves considered victims in this case.

The gloves discovered close to Nancy’s house didn’t seem to connect with the rest of the evidence in the case, according to police.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following this case closely. Sheriff Nanos recently shared with KVOA that when they found a pair of gloves with DNA about two miles from the victim’s home, they initially, and with strong conviction, thought the gloves were simply lost from a local restaurant. It’s interesting how initial assumptions can shift in an investigation!

Although some people noticed the gloves in the doorbell camera footage looked similar to those found near the crime scene, Nanos dismissed this as just a guess. Investigators had already identified the glove’s owner – an employee at a local restaurant – and confirmed they were not connected to the case.

After a human bone was discovered about seven miles from Nancy’s home on May 7th, investigators thoroughly examined the area, but they later determined it wasn’t connected to the case.

According to a Tucson Police Department spokesperson, the evidence they found wasn’t related to any crime. Instead, it appeared to be part of an archaeological study of ancient artifacts.
