Say Goodbye to Disney Television As Major Rebranding Revealed

Disney is updating its branding for shows and movies on streaming and television. As part of this, it’s officially changing its name, marking the beginning of a fresh chapter.

Disney Branded Television is now known as Disney Kids & Family. This change comes from Debra OConnell, who became Chairman of Disney Entertainment Television in March, and is part of her efforts to reshape the division. OConnell, along with Ayo Davis, announced the new name in a statement to Disney’s creative teams.

Disney Branded Television Is No More

We’ve created popular and lasting brands that families and children worldwide enjoy. Our new name better represents our imaginative work and storytelling, and will help others understand what we do. Although our name is changing, our dedication to quality storytelling and to all of you remains unchanged. We appreciate your continued partnership, teamwork, and creativity, and we’re excited about what we’ll accomplish together in the future. Thank you for everything.

The name change is mainly to better represent the wide range of content Disney offers for families across platforms like Disney+, Disney Junior, and its online channels. Previously, the old name caused confusion because not all shows and movies were directly tied to existing Disney characters or stories.

The Times, They Are A-Changing at Disney

Disney Branded Television first launched in 2020, operating under the leadership of Gary Marsh as part of the General Entertainment Content group. In 2021, Courtenay Davis took over from Marsh. Now known as Disney Kids & Family, the division is still a part of Disney Entertainment Television. Last year, some of its most popular shows on streaming included Bluey, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and Phineas and Ferb.

As a critic, I have to admit Disney+ is still moving the needle with its legacy content. The recent Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special was a huge success, racking up over six million views across Disney+ and Hulu in just three days. It quickly became the top original streaming movie for young girls, specifically those aged 6-11 and 12-17, throughout 2024. And it’s not just Hannah Montana; the Descendants franchise continues to thrive, boosted by last year’s incredibly popular Descendants/Zombies: Worlds Collide tour, and let’s not forget both series are known for their catchy soundtracks!

Disney Kids & Family creates content for a range of ages. They make shows for preschoolers on Disney Junior, kids and teens on Disney Channel, and the whole family on Disney+. Many original shows from Disney Junior and Disney Channel can also be found streaming on Disney+.
