Jonathan Bailey is known for playing a variety of roles – from intense aristocrats to romantic leads, and even sharing the screen with Scarlett Johansson in the upcoming Jurassic World: Rebirth. While he often appears charming and charismatic – Johansson herself described him as “twinkly” – Bailey says his public persona doesn’t reflect his whole self. In a recent interview, the British actor discussed his need for privacy and explained why he prefers to keep his personal life private, despite the attention he receives.
Earlier this year, Johansson noted that Bailey is “bright and fully present,” appreciating his emotional range and down-to-earth personality. However, when asked about his reputation for being warm and approachable, the Wicked: For Good cast member subtly disagreed. He recently told Esquire magazine:
I feel like I’m very private, but I’m not secretive.
He believes this distinction is important. While the actor, known from Bridgerton, isn’t trying to conceal anything, he’s cautious about revealing too much, especially given how the media often lacks the ability to understand subtle details. He explains it’s like voicing an opinion at a dinner party before you’ve fully thought it through.
I just don’t want to be in a situation where I later regret what I said. I’d rather avoid that if possible.
It appears Bailey is working on thinking before he speaks—and even trying to eliminate impulsive reactions altogether. This level of emotional understanding seems to be a key part of his journey, both in his role and in his personal life.
The actor will be reprising his role as Prince Fiyero in the upcoming movie Wicked: For Good, a modern sequel to the classic story of Oz. Interestingly, both the character and the actor himself are on a path to discover who they are and what their purpose is, a connection the actor readily acknowledges.
Fiyero feels a deep longing for purpose in his life, something beyond just his feelings for Elphaba. He wants to feel anchored and be part of something truly meaningful.
For the time being, he’s choosing to take a break from acting during the 2026 film season to concentrate on The Shameless Fund, his charity which supports LGBTQ+ causes around the world. He’s deeply committed to expanding the nonprofit’s impact, going beyond simply lending his name to it. He’s actively involved by giving talks, collaborating with large companies, and building the fund into a long-term, effective organization.

The nickname ‘twinkly’ suits Bailey well, but it doesn’t quite capture everything about them. While they certainly have a bright and captivating presence, there’s a surprising depth to their personality and talent that many people don’t realize.
If Wicked: For Good is as successful as the first movie—which earned $756 million worldwide—the actor’s career will likely reach even greater heights. However, he doesn’t plan to seek fame for its own sake or conform to industry expectations. Whether he’s playing a character with a difficult fate or a defiant leader, Bailey prioritizes being genuine over seeking public approval.
Jonathan Bailey is back in theaters this fall as Fiyero in Wicked: For Good, which arrives on November 21st. Before that, you can see him alongside Scarlett Johansson in Jurassic World: Rebirth, currently available to stream with a Peacock subscription.
