Scarlett Johansson’s Dystopian Sci-Fi Thriller Is Getting A New Streaming Home In 2 Weeks

Scarlett Johansson‘s dystopian sci-fi thriller lands a new streaming home.

Scarlett Johansson has starred in many successful films, and a significant number of them fall into the science fiction genre. Throughout her impressive career, she’s appeared in sci-fi movies like the unsettling Under the Skin, the poignant Her, the futuristic Ghost in the Shell, and the fast-paced Lucy. More recently, she joined the Jurassic World franchise as Zora Bennett in the hit film Jurassic World Rebirth. Now, fans can enjoy another one of Johansson’s sci-fi movies through streaming services.

Starting July 1st, you’ll be able to watch The Island on Paramount+. The sci-fi thriller, originally released in theaters in 2005, is just one of the new titles coming to the streaming service next month. Paramount+ is adding a variety of sci-fi content in July, including the fifth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which premieres on July 23rd, alongside several Star Trek series.

Despite grossing $162.9 million worldwide in theaters, the science fiction thriller The Island starring Scarlett Johansson did not make enough money to cover its production costs. With a budget of $126 million, the film needed to earn between $252 and $315 million to break even, ultimately costing the studio a significant amount – hundreds of millions of dollars. The movie’s screenwriters included Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who are also known for their work on the Star Trek franchise, strengthening its ties to Paramount+.

The sci-fi movie The Island boasts a talented cast, including Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor, best known for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars. The film also features Djimon Hounsou, Sean Bean, and Steve Buscemi. The story centers on Jordan Two Delta (Johansson) and Lincoln Six Echo (McGregor), two clones who discover a disturbing secret: they live on an isolated island where clones are created to provide organs and serve other nefarious purposes for the rich and powerful.

In The Island, Johansson and McGregor’s characters must break free from a controlled system and reveal its secrets to destroy it. The film was directed by Michael Bay, a highly experienced director known for his work in science fiction, including the popular Transformers movie series. The Island came out in theaters two years before the first Transformers film.

If you’re a fan of science fiction and enjoy seeing big stars work with acclaimed directors, the newly added film to Paramount+ is a great choice. With a solid 63% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, “The Island” is definitely worth watching when it becomes available on streaming in July.
