Scarlett Johansson’s Exorcist Movie Finally Gets Major Update

2025 proved to be a fantastic year for horror movies, and now a major star is joining the scene. Scarlett Johansson, known for her roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Jurassic World series, is set to appear in her first horror film – a revival of a classic franchise that hasn’t been as successful lately. The project recently received a significant boost, bringing it closer to becoming a reality.

Naomi Johansson will star with Jacobi Jupe in a new Exorcist movie directed by Mike Flanagan. According to Variety, the film is now scheduled for release on March 12, 2027, suggesting production will begin later in 2024.

Mike Flanagan is writing, directing, and producing the upcoming film, a collaboration between Universal, Blumhouse, and Atomic Monster. Currently, Scarlett Johansson and newcomer Jude Hill, recently known for his work in Hamnet, are the only confirmed actors. With a release date now set, casting is expected to expand, as the studio appears to be making this project a high priority.

Mike Flanagan and Scarlett Johansson Hope To Bring The Exorcist Back To Relevance

As a horror fan, I still think The Exorcist is one of the scariest movies ever made. When it came out in 1973, it totally blew everyone away – critics loved it, and it made a massive $441 million! Even now, it’s genuinely disturbing, largely thanks to Linda Blair’s incredible performance. It’s a shame though, because despite being such a classic, the sequels and other films in the franchise just haven’t lived up to the original.

Okay, so Universal really swung for the fences with The Exorcist: Believer. They dropped a massive $400 million to get the rights and planned a whole new trilogy, hoping to build directly off the success of the original. They even managed to get Ellen Burstyn back, which was exciting! Unfortunately, the movie didn’t perform as well as they’d hoped at the box office, and it looks like they’re rethinking their plans for the franchise now.

This led to Universal hiring director Mike Flanagan to lead the Exorcist franchise, a series he’s a huge fan of. He hopes to revitalize this classic horror series, and he believes he has a unique vision for it. As Flanagan explained to The Hollywood Reporter, he actively pursued the project because he felt he could bring something new to it. He wants to create a film that respects the original movies but doesn’t simply rely on nostalgia.

The Exorcist will hit theaters on March 12, 2027.
