There’s talk that Scarlett Johansson might join the cast of The Batman Part II, and if she does, she’d likely play a character with a long history in the Batman comics. However, the director, Matt Reeves, could also choose to reimagine the role. It’s been three years since the first The Batman movie, and fans have another two years to wait for the sequel, which is currently scheduled for 2027. While plot details are still a secret, the addition of Johansson would certainly be a significant development.
According to Deadline, Scarlett Johansson, known for her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is potentially joining the DC Universe in Matt Reeves’ next The Batman movie. While DC Studios hasn’t officially announced anything, the news has sparked guesses about which character the Jurassic World Rebirth actress might play.
The first movie hinted at what’s coming in the next one, including a glimpse of Barry Keoghan as the Joker. Colin Farrell’s Penguin dramatically changed the criminal landscape of Gotham, and now seems to be a major player. Considering how things are developing in director Reeves’ Batman world, the story for the character rumored to be played by Johansson could be full of surprises.
Scarlett Johansson May Be Playing Gilda Gold In The Batman Part II
Scarlett Johansson, known for her heroic roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is reportedly taking on a potentially villainous character in the DC Universe. According to journalist Jeff Sneider of The InSneider, she will play Gilda Gold, the wife of Harvey Dent. Sneider also says the film is currently searching for actors to play both Harvey Dent and his father.
It’s not unexpected to see Harvey Dent, who later becomes Two-Face, given the importance of crime and corruption in Reeves’ Gotham. However, the introduction of Gilda Kotuby is more intriguing. Although she’s Harvey’s wife, many comic book fans will recognize her as being connected to the Holiday Killer’s true identity.
In the comic book story The Long Halloween, a killer known as Holiday targets and murders key figures from Gotham City’s criminal underworld on various holidays. These killings worsen the existing conflict between the Maroni and Falcone crime families, and other villains like The Joker and Poison Ivy also become involved.
Although Alberto Falcone admitted to being the holiday killer, the truth came out that Gilda actually began the murders. Her motive was to free up Harvey’s time so they could be together. She stopped after a while, but it’s believed Harvey continued the killings, ultimately becoming the villain Two-Face.
As a huge Batman fan, I’ve always loved this particular comic book arc – it’s a really clever detective story that throws Batman into the thick of Gotham’s criminal underworld and pits him against some of his classic enemies. Honestly, the character of Gilda feels like she’d fit right into the world Matt Reeves created with The Batman. But, based on where the story’s gone so far, I’m starting to think we might not actually see this storyline adapted, which is a little disappointing.
Gilda’s Addition Doesn’t Mean Matt Reeves Is Adapting The Long Halloween
Throughout The Long Halloween, the Holiday killer primarily targets members of the Maroni and Falcone crime families, who are led by Salvatore Maroni and Carmine Falcone. Both leaders are killed during the story. Additionally, Carmine Falcone’s daughter, Sofia, also dies, and his son, Alberto, is ultimately arrested and revealed to be the Holiday killer.
Adding Gilda to the cast hints at the direction Reeves might be taking the story, but a major problem is that most of these characters are either dead or in jail. The Riddler killed Carmine Falcone in The Batman, and Oz Cobblepot eliminated Alberto and the Maroni family in The Penguin. Sofia Falcone is still alive, but she’s currently locked up in Arkham Asylum.
Besides these new villains like Scarecrow, Mad Hatter, and Poison Ivy, adapting The Long Halloween will be tricky because the story heavily relies on the established mob bosses who are targeted by the Holiday Killer. That said, Gilda could potentially pursue another villain in the next movie.

With the Maronis and Falcones defeated, Oz Cobb, now known as The Penguin, has risen to power as Gotham’s new crime boss. The story ends with Oz surveying his criminal empire from a lavish penthouse, but the appearance of the Bat-signal signals that Batman will challenge his reign.

Penguin might face danger from more than just Batman. If Harvey Dent appears in the next movie, he’ll probably be the main force opposing Penguin, targeting the dishonest officials and police officers who work for him. While Harvey may become Two-Face later on, he starts as a lawyer dedicated to fighting for what’s right.
While Harvey is focused on fighting Oz, Gilda might become annoyed with his constant absence and take on the Holiday persona. This would allow her to disrupt Penguin’s control of Gotham, mirroring her storyline from The Long Halloween, and fitting with the established patterns in Matt Reeves’ Batman films.
Every storyline in The Batman features a powerful woman facing off against the criminal underworld. Catwoman teamed up with Batman to avenge her father, Carmine Falcone, and Sofia Falcone sought revenge on those who abandoned her when she was blamed for her father’s mistakes.
While Gilda doesn’t currently have a personal issue with The Penguin, that could shift in the next Batman movie. Details about The Batman Part II‘s plot are being kept under wraps, giving Reeves creative control over what happens with Johansson’s character.
