The first Scary Movie was a game-changer, kicking off a wave of successful comedy spoofs in Hollywood. It did well by cleverly satirizing popular horror films and blockbusters, creating a winning formula for Dimension Films. But later sequels weren’t as successful, and the franchise lost steam. After years of disappointing reviews and ticket sales, Scary Movie went on hold for thirteen years. Now, Scary Movie 6 – officially titled Scary MoVIe – is being made by Paramount Pictures and Miramax. The filmmakers hope the long break will work to their advantage, allowing them to poke fun at a new wave of horror movies and appeal to a fresh audience.
A new report from Dread Central says the next Scary Movie will poke fun at popular recent horror films. It’s expected to target hits like Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, Zach Cregger’s Weapons, and the A Quiet Place franchise. Sinners was a huge success in 2025, earning $369 million worldwide and gaining Oscar buzz thanks to strong direction and a standout performance by Michael B. Jordan. Weapons also did incredibly well, bringing in $270 million globally and establishing Zach Cregger as a key figure in modern horror. The A Quiet Place series continues to be a well-known and profitable franchise, giving the Scary Movie writers plenty of material for satire.
Scary MoVIe Tackling Recent Successes Is Great News

Focusing the new Scary Movie films on current blockbuster hits is a smart move, showing the creators are trying new things to revitalize the series – and that’s a good sign. In the past, Scary Movie often struggled because its jokes relied too much on quickly outdated trends instead of making fun of classic movie elements. It also started focusing on parodying things outside of the horror genre, which didn’t work as well.
The filmmakers aimed for a wider audience by drawing inspiration from hugely popular horror movies that broke the mold and became major cultural events. While the new Scary Movie is likely to satirize recent, critically praised horror films, it’s crucial to balance those references with properties that are instantly recognizable to everyone. The original Scary Movie films were so successful because they cleverly parodied unavoidable pop culture hits like Scream and The Sixth Sense.
Fans can expect the next Scary Movie to recapture the outrageous and unfiltered humor of the original films. Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans—the creators of the first Scary Movie—are writing the script again after 18 years, and they’re working with director Michael Tiddes to bring the franchise back to its former glory. Plus, Anna Faris and Regina Hall are reprising their iconic roles as Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks, promising a nostalgic and hilarious experience for longtime fans.
Scary Movie 6 is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 12, 2026.
