A comic book titled “Top Secret Service,” which Dark Horse Comics previously terminated, has been revitalized and is also set to become a movie. According to “The Hollywood Reporter,” Solipsist Films has acquired the film rights from writer Zack Keller and artist Giovanna La Pietra in an early deal. The original creative team behind the comic will likely be present at New York Comic-Con this year to disclose the publishing strategy for Top Secret Service, hinting at a new publisher for the title. Keller will write the screenplay for the adaptation, with no director or actors currently attached.
Stephen L’Heureux, producer at Solipsist Films, will oversee the project production. His previous roles include producing films like “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For”, as well as smaller projects such as “The House that Jack Built”, “Uncross the Stars”, and “The Harvest”. He is also currently developing the upcoming Universal movie “Kung Fu”, starring Donnie Yen. Meanwhile, the script is being written by Keller, who has previously worked on “Cuphead” comics, contributed to Disney’s “DuckTales”, and was involved in “The Walking Dead” video games. Co-creator La Pietra is recognized for his work on the “Red Sonja” comics.
Top Secret Service‘s Comics History
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of “Top Secret Service” by Dark Horse Comics since their announcement back in August 2023. Initially set to hit the shelves in 2025, this comic book had me marking my calendar for its arrival. Unfortunately, in an unexpected turn of events, the publisher announced earlier this year that they’ve canceled the title without providing a clear reason for its sudden disappearance from their publishing schedule. I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment as I wait to see if this intriguing comic will find another home or if it remains shrouded in secrecy.
The film titled “Top Secret Service” was marketed as an exhilarating blend of humor and action, reminiscent of movies like “21 Jump Street” and “Men in Black“. The story revolves around Chris Lu and Blake Sansome, long-time friends who finally reached their dream of becoming U.S. Secret Service Agents. Instead of safeguarding the current president, they are tasked with protecting a retired ex-president living peacefully on a Montana ranch. However, things aren’t as they appear, and the duo unwittingly stumbles upon a deep-rooted government conspiracy aimed at hiding extraterrestrial contact.
At present, no additional talents have been designated for the Top Secret Service project outside of Keller. However, with the creative team planning to disclose a publishing strategy at the New York Comic-Con, updates about the movie might surface within the next few months.
The movie titled “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” featured Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Brolin, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, Eva Green, Powers Boothe, Ray Liotta, Christopher Meloni, Dennis Haysbert, Christopher Lloyd, and Jeremy Piven. Unfortunately, this film was met with disapproval by both audiences and critics, resulting in a 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Moreover, the movie’s earnings were disappointing, only grossing $39.4 million globally against a production budget of $65 million. At present, Solipsist Films has not announced a release date for “Top Secret Service”.
