Walt Disney Animation Studios has had a lot of successful films in the last 15 years, and many of them have gotten sequels. We’ve seen multiple movies from franchises like Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, Moana, and Zootopia (with Zootopia 2 becoming Disney’s highest-earning animated film). However, some hits haven’t gotten follow-ups. Despite making $607.5 million worldwide and receiving good reviews (89% on Rotten Tomatoes), Tangled, which came out in 2010, has remained a single film. Now, one of its directors, Nathan Greno, is sharing why a Tangled 2 never happened.
In an interview with The Direct, producer Glen Keane explained that Disney struggled to come up with a compelling story for a Tangled sequel. He used the examples of Pinocchio and Beauty and the Beast, asking, “Once the main characters achieve their ultimate transformation, what’s left to explore?” Keane shared that the original creative team met to discuss the possibility of a sequel, but ultimately concluded they couldn’t find a story that felt worthy of telling.
Disney Found Other Ways to Continue the Tangled Franchise

Like many beloved Disney animated films, Tangled is based on a well-known fairy tale – specifically, Rapunzel. Because there wasn’t an official continuation of the original story ever written, Disney didn’t have existing source material to work from when considering Tangled 2. A sequel would have made sense, considering the first film was both a commercial and critical hit, praised for its stunning animation and engaging story. However, that success would have created a lot of pressure to deliver a worthy follow-up. Considering how disappointing a lackluster Tangled 2 would have been, Disney likely made the right decision not to pursue it.
Because the movie Tangled was so popular, Disney found ways to expand the story and its world. They released the short film Tangled Ever After in 2012, which showed Rapunzel and Eugene’s wedding, and also created a TV series that lasted three seasons. Although details about a potential Tangled 2 weren’t shared, some of those ideas likely found their way into these other projects. A Tangled 2 would probably have continued the story after the wedding, showing Rapunzel adjusting to her new life. While these ideas might not have been enough for another full movie, they worked well in other formats, letting Disney keep the story going for fans who wanted more.
A live-action version of Tangled is in development, with Teagan Croft, Milo Manheim, and Kathryn Hahn already cast. Disney hopes to repeat the success of last year’s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake, bringing another beloved animated film to a new audience. Since a traditional sequel isn’t planned, this remake is a great way to keep the Tangled story alive and introduce it to a new generation.
Disney often makes sequels to its popular live-action remakes, like the upcoming Lilo & Stitch 2. With the new Tangled movie doing well, people are wondering if a sequel to that film might be considered. While previous attempts to develop a Tangled sequel with Greno and Co. didn’t result in a compelling story, Disney would likely be open to a fresh idea from a new creative team. If someone came up with the right concept, executives would almost certainly approve it.
