Despite receiving the worst reviews in the 30-year history of the Scream series, Scream 7 has proven to be a commercial success. It earned a remarkable $63.6 million domestically during its opening weekend, breaking a series record. While it’s still uncertain how well the film will perform in the coming weeks with new movies being released, this strong start puts Scream 7 on track to be profitable. In just under a week, the sequel has already achieved a major box office milestone.
Currently, Scream 7 has earned $104.4 million worldwide (according to Box Office Mojo). It’s the top-grossing horror film of 2026 so far, surpassing Sam Raimi’s Send Help ($89.3 million) and earning almost twice as much as the well-received 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple ($57.8 million). This makes Scream 7 the sixth film in the Scream series to reach over $100 million globally.
Can Scream 7 Become the Franchise’s Highest-Grossing Installment?

As a big Scream fan, I’ve been keeping an eye on how the latest one is doing at the box office. The original from ’96 still holds the record with $173 million worldwide, and Scream 7 is currently about $68.6 million away from matching that. It’s interesting – a huge opening weekend doesn’t always mean a movie will have staying power. Horror films, in particular, tend to make most of their money right away, fueled by initial buzz. Honestly, the reviews for Scream 7 could really make or break its long-term run, though so far they haven’t seemed to hurt it much. The good news is, audiences seem to be enjoying it – it’s sitting at a 76% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a pretty solid sign!
A key advantage for Scream 7 is that it’s likely to be the main horror choice for its audience. While The Bride! might attract some of the same viewers—especially those familiar with Bride of Frankenstein—that film blends horror with romance and thriller elements. Scream 7 is a more straightforward horror movie, making it a natural pick for those seeking a scare. Send Help has largely finished its theatrical run and isn’t much of a competition anymore, and there aren’t any other big horror releases planned until Ready or Not 2 comes out in a few weeks.
For comparison, Scream VI earned $67.1 million worldwide on its opening weekend in 2023 and ultimately grossed $166.5 million. While critics generally liked Scream VI more than Scream 7, horror movies often earn the most money early on, and that was true for Scream VI as well. After a very strong opening, its earnings dropped significantly – 61% in its second weekend and another 51.9% in its third. Despite these declines, it almost surpassed the original Scream’s all-time record. Therefore, Scream 7’s bigger opening weekend gives it a good advantage, and it’s possible it could earn another $67 million before its run in theaters is over.
Even if Scream 7 doesn’t set any records, Paramount would be happy if it performs as well as the last two movies in the series. The film faced a lot of behind-the-scenes challenges, including the firing of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega’s decision to leave. The fact that it still succeeded shows why the studio is already planning Scream 8. While they’ll likely aim for better reviews with the next installment, the Scream franchise remains very successful at the box office.
