In March 2026, Sony announced it would stop releasing its big PlayStation 5 games on computers, returning to a strategy of keeping them exclusive to the PlayStation console. My initial reaction was disappointment, but after thinking about it, I understand Sony’s decision. It seemed like console-exclusive games were disappearing, with even Nintendo releasing major titles from other companies on its Switch and upcoming Switch 2. While other consoles also broadened their offerings, both Nintendo and now Sony are moving back towards prioritizing games only on their own systems.
It’s puzzling why game companies restrict releases to specific consoles when PCs offer another way to earn money. Generally, making games available on more platforms leads to higher sales. Plus, console manufacturers like Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft actually make most of their profits from game sales, not the consoles themselves. For years, they’ve even been willing to sell consoles at a loss, knowing they’ll recoup the cost through game purchases – a strategy that’s proven successful for decades. While Sony’s recent move to limit PC access might seem odd, it will ultimately be good for gamers.
Sony Will Focus Game Development to Support the PlayStation 6

Just to clarify, Sony will still release some online games on various platforms, so players of games like Marvel Tokon and Marathon don’t need to worry. However, popular single-player games such as the 2025 release Ghosts of Yotei and the upcoming game Saros will now only be available on PlayStation 5. This change comes after six years of making fewer games exclusive to PlayStation consoles. While Sony hasn’t said why, it’s likely connected to the upcoming PlayStation 6. The PS6 is expected to be costly to build and buy, so keeping major game releases exclusive to it will likely boost both console and game sales.
Sony is likely to benefit from this strategy, especially considering their success with console exclusives over the past 25 years. Comparing recent earnings to their overall history since 1995, company leaders probably decided to stick with what they know works – keeping games exclusive to PlayStation consoles. This also makes sense given that PlayStation fans are loyal and generally prefer playing on consoles rather than PCs, and Sony’s financial results show that PC game sales haven’t been as strong.
For the past six years, Sony has been releasing games on PC, but the timing of those releases was inconsistent. Some games came to PC shortly after their PlayStation release, while others took much longer. This delay hurt sales, as PC gamers weren’t interested in buying games that were already old. Ultimately, Sony’s decision to focus on PlayStation games is a business move that will likely allow them to concentrate on developing major, popular franchises like God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, Gran Turismo, Horizon, Infamous, Killzone, The Last of Us, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, Shadow of the Colossus, SOCOM, Spider-Man, Twisted Metal, and Uncharted, among others.
A Return to Console Exclusivity Is a Good Thing

Sony’s move to make more games only for PlayStation is disappointing for PC players, but it’s not a complete shift. Games published by Sony but created by other developers, such as Death Stranding 2, will still be available on platforms beyond the PlayStation 5. Sony seems to be concentrating its game development efforts on exclusive titles, possibly to prepare for the next PlayStation (PS6) and strengthen its brand. This change could also be a response to competition from Microsoft’s Xbox, which is rumored to be a PC-compatible platform capable of playing a wide range of games – potentially including Sony’s titles. Returning to console exclusivity allows Sony to differentiate itself.
