Scream 7’s Stu Return Scared Matthew Lillard (Plus What Makes a Good Scream Movie) [Exclusive]

Matthew Lillard became well-known in 1996 for his role as Stu Macher in the hit horror movie Scream, a performance that remains iconic to this day. Surprisingly, he’s returning to the series in the upcoming Scream 7, even though his character appeared to die years ago. While promoting his Ghost Face Vodka from his company, Macabre Spirits, Lillard spoke with Comic Book about his experiences with the Scream franchise and his return. He admitted he was initially hesitant to reprise the role, worried about potentially damaging the character’s reputation with fans.

Lillard explained he was worried about risking his reputation with fans. He said, “I was putting everything people love at risk.” He was especially concerned about potentially failing and damaging the positive image fans had of him and Stu, even later in life. He admitted, “The thought of messing up what fans think of me, or Stu, was really concerning as we got closer to making a decision.” He was initially excited about the opportunity but grew increasingly anxious about potentially failing and ruining his legacy.

Matthew Lillard Discusses What Makes a Great Scream Movie

Despite not being heavily involved since the original film, Lillard has followed the Scream series (though he admits to missing a couple of the sequels, specifically Scream 3 and 4). When asked what sets a great Scream movie apart from the less popular ones, he pointed to one crucial factor.

What really makes a Scream movie good, in my opinion, is having strong, well-developed characters and a certain appealing quality. The first film was so successful because we really get to know and care about the people in it. Wes Craven took the time to build those characters throughout the movie, so when things get really intense at the end, those unique little details about them feel enjoyable and add charm, rather than just focusing on violence.

He admitted the film is extremely violent, but pointed out a surprisingly endearing moment – the character breaking down and crying about his mother. He found this, along with other quirky details, strangely appealing and said it actually helped offset the intensity of the violence.

Scream 7’s Stu Return Could Bring Back 1 Thing From The Original

Matthew Lillard’s portrayal of Stu Macher in the movie Scream is widely considered a standout performance in the entire franchise, and one of the best roles in slasher film history. He previously revealed that many of Stu’s most memorable lines were improvised, and he’s now confirmed he had the same creative freedom with his recent return in Scream 7.

Lillard hinted that Kevin Williamson recognizes his talent and lets him contribute creatively, saying, ‘I won’t say anything else other than that.’ He added that Williamson is one of the few creators who give him the freedom to do his thing.

The new movie Scream 7 comes out in theaters on February 27th. You can also get Ghost Face Vodka, made by Macabre Spirits, right now.
