For over ten years, fans have hoped for a return to the quality of the earlier Scrubs seasons, after the ninth season disappointed many with a cast change and a weak ending. While the recent revival has largely delivered, it’s had a few issues reminiscent of that earlier stumble. Now, the latest episode has successfully recaptured the show’s original spirit, largely by bringing back an element that was missing from most of the new episodes.
The Scrubs episode “My Best Friend’s Barbecue” introduces two concepts: “Doctor Face,” a blank, unemotional expression used when delivering bad news or avoiding reaction, and “Nurse Voice,” a comforting tone for patients. JD struggles to maintain “Doctor Face” when he finds out he wasn’t invited to Turk and Carla’s annual barbecue, and he tries to get answers directly from Carla. This sets up the central conflict of the episode and highlights something fans of the Scrubs revival have been wanting more of: scenes featuring JD and Carla together.
Scrubs Finally Delivers the JD & Carla Scenes We Needed

The episode starts with JD attempting to win Carla over by suggesting they strengthen their friendship and spend more quality time together. However, Carla is struggling with the effects of menopause, which includes noticeable hot flashes – shown comically with a stunt performer appearing to be on fire – and frequent emotional swings. These challenges are a major focus throughout the episode.
So, JD and Carla needed to talk, and honestly, the setting was classic them – the hospital morgue! He’d even brought ice cream, which was…a choice. But it worked, because Carla really opened up about feeling lost and not recognizing herself anymore. I thought it was a brave moment. JD, trying to be helpful, took some of her work, but that totally backfired and things got tense. It actually raised the stakes of the episode, which I appreciated – it wasn’t just fluff.
The Scrubs revival has finally hit its stride, reaching the level of the original series, thanks to a strong episode focusing solely on JD and Carla. This episode perfectly balances the show’s signature humor with its heartfelt moments. While other elements contribute to its success, the core of the episode—and what ties everything together—is the collision of the “Doctor Face” and “Nurse Voice” concepts, prompted by Carla helping a patient accept necessary life changes and realizing she needed to heed her own advice.
Fans of Scrubs have always loved the dynamic between Carla and JD, even if they didn’t know they were waiting for more scenes with just the two of them. From the very first episode in 2001, their chemistry was clear. Carla was a crucial friend and mentor to JD throughout his time at Sacred Heart Hospital, and he truly wouldn’t have found his footing without her support.
Unfortunately, Season 1 of Scrubs is quite short, with only nine episodes, and this was the seventh one. The final two episodes will be released throughout the month, and it’s currently unclear if the show will continue beyond that. It would be a real loss if it ended now, though, because Scrubs seems to be hitting its stride again.
