Sean Penn Just Became the 8th Actor in History To Achieve 1 Incredible Oscars Feat (but Why Wasn’t He There?)

Okay, so Sean Penn took home the Best Supporting Actor Oscar this year – a fantastic win for his powerful performance as Col. Steven J. Lockjaw in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another. It was a bit strange, though, because Penn himself didn’t show up to accept it! Luckily, Kieran Culkin was there to grab the award on his behalf. A great film and a deserving win, even if the acceptance was a little… unusual.

How Many Oscars Has Sean Penn Won?

Sean Penn has become one of only eight people ever to win three acting Oscars. He’s the fourth male actor to reach this milestone. He previously won Best Actor for his roles in Mystic River (2004) and Milk (2009). Here are the other performers who have also earned three or more Oscars:

  • Katherine Hepburn (4)
  • Meryl Streep (3)
  • Jack Nicholson (3)
  • Ingrid Bergman (3)
  • Daniel Day-Lewis (3)
  • Frances McDormand (3)
  • Walter Brennan (3)

Why Wasn’t Sean Penn At The Oscars 2026?

Penn hasn’t publicly explained why he’s been missing recent award shows. His representative simply said he was unable or unwilling to attend. This isn’t entirely unexpected, as he’s skipped several high-profile events this season, even when nominated and winning awards – he didn’t attend the SAG or BAFTA awards, despite winning at both. Interestingly, he did show up to the Golden Globes, where he didn’t win.
