Alia Shawkat is famous for playing Maeby Fünke on the beloved comedy series Arrested Development. However, she also starred in another funny and quirky show called Search Party back in 2016. With it now available to stream, it’s a great time to check it out.
Search Party is a TV show that first aired on TBS on November 21, 2016. It centers around Dory Sief, played by Alia Shawkat, who convinces her friends to help her investigate the disappearance of a former college friend, Chantal Witherbottom. However, the show doesn’t stick to one case – each season features a brand new mystery to solve, keeping viewers engaged and surprised.
Like shows such as Only Murders in the Building, each season of this series focuses on a new mystery. In Season 2, Dory and her friends try to solve the murder of a private investigator, believing he had a connection to Chantal’s disappearance. Then, in Season 3, Dory finds herself at the murder trial for that same investigator.
The TV show Search Party features a different mystery each season, but all the cases are linked together, creating a larger, ongoing story. The show stars Alia Shawkat, along with John Reynolds (from Stranger Things), John Early (30 Rock), Meredith Hagner (Palm Springs), and Brandon Micheal Hall (The Mayor). Things really start to change beginning with Season 3.
With five seasons and fifty half-hour episodes, Search Party is a great comedy to watch all at once. While each season presents intriguing mysteries and investigations, it’s the show’s incredibly funny cast that truly sets it apart as one of the best dark comedies of the 2010s.
Search Party Holds an Impressive Rotten Tomatoes Score
I’m a huge fan of Search Party, and it’s not just me! Critics absolutely love it – it has a remarkable 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. What’s even more amazing is that the first season was 100% ‘Certified Fresh,’ and every season after that stayed incredibly high, with the final season also hitting a perfect 100%! Luckily, audiences seem to feel the same way as the critics do, which is fantastic.
The first season of Search Party received an 88% audience score, and Season 2 was even more popular with 94%. However, audience scores dropped for later seasons, with Season 4 at 58% and Season 5 at just 45%. This is quite different from the positive reviews the show received from critics.
Even though opinions on the later seasons of Search Party are mixed, the show is still highly recommended for anyone who enjoys comedies or murder mysteries. With a 7.6 rating on IMDb based on over fifteen thousand reviews, it’s clear that this dark comedy remains popular with audiences.
All five seasons of the series Search Party are now streaming on Netflix in the U.S., starting February 5th.
