Stephen King remains incredibly popular, and that’s clear from the ongoing success of movies and TV shows based on his books. Just after news broke about a new novel adding to his connected storytelling world, it’s been announced that a hit TV series adapted from his work will return for a second season – though the exact timing is still to come.
If the second season of It: Welcome to Derry delivers on the promises made in the first season’s finale, the wait will be worthwhile. Fortunately, HBO has the flexibility to take the necessary time to produce the season properly, which is a benefit compared to shows like Stranger Things where the young cast members are growing up quickly, creating a sense of urgency.
IT: Welcome to Derry Is Wisely Avoiding the Stranger Things Conundrum

While a second season of IT: Welcome to Derry is planned, it probably won’t be released until late 2027 or even 2028. This means it would have a similar gap between seasons as shows like Stranger Things, Pluribus, and Severance – which often take years to return. Fans generally don’t like these long waits, and in the case of Stranger Things, the delays caused significant problems during production.
It became noticeably funny by the final season of Stranger Things to see the actors still playing high schoolers, as they had clearly grown up much more than their characters. This became apparent between seasons 2 and 3, with the actors aging significantly over the two-year break. The gap between seasons 3 and 4 was even more dramatic – the cast who returned after the pandemic looked very different from how audiences remembered them.
IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Will Tell A Game-Changing Time Travel Story

The new season of Welcome to Derry won’t have to worry about aging its original cast. The show will be a prequel, taking place in the past and focusing on Pennywise’s earlier attacks – specifically, terrorizing the parents of the children we met in Season 1. We already saw glimpses of this in flashbacks to 1935, and Season 2 will expand on that era. This means a completely new, younger cast will take over, with some actors playing the younger versions of characters we’ve already seen. The original cast is free to move on without disrupting the story.
What’s particularly fascinating about the show Welcome to Derry is its handling of the backstory. (Spoiler alert!) The season one finale showed that Pennywise experiences time as a complete loop, where the past, present, and future all connect. Knowing how he would eventually be defeated in IT: Part Two, Pennywise deliberately targeted the children of Derry in the 1960s. When that attempt failed, he vowed to try again in the 1930s, which will be explored in season two.
No matter the outcome, Pennywise’s appearance in a time-spanning chess game creates exciting possibilities within Stephen King’s fictional world. If Season 2 of Welcome to Derry is handled well, it could connect King’s massive Dark Tower series more closely with the story of IT, ultimately strengthening the connections between all of his horror narratives – what fans call the King ‘Macroverse’.
