A prime example is Amazon’s Fallout, which first aired in Spring 2024 and just released its second season on Prime Video this week.

The second season is expected to be even more successful, and early reviews confirm this – it’s already broken two records on Rotten Tomatoes after the release of its first episode.

The Fallout show has achieved a remarkable feat: its second season currently boasts the highest critic score of any live-action video game adaptation, earning a 96% rating. This surpasses the 92% achieved by Season 2 of The Last of Us, and even improves upon the 93% rating of Fallout’s first season, indicating critics generally enjoyed the new season even more than the original.

The series currently holds the record for the highest critic score of any live-action video game adaptation, averaging 95% across both seasons. This slightly surpasses the 94% score of *The Last of Us*. *Halo* comes in next with 80%, followed by *Twisted Metal* at 79% and *The Witcher* at 75%.

This is rare for video game adaptations – The Last of Us has a 62% audience score, Halo at 61%, and The Witcher at just 46%. Twisted Metal is the exception, surprisingly scoring 10% higher with audiences at 89%.

The positive response to the Fallout series isn’t just from critics; regular viewers, including many longtime fans of the games, are loving it too. In fact, it’s now tied with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as the highest-rated video game adaptation (whether live-action or animated), earning a 95% audience score.

The first episode of Season 2 is incredibly popular with audiences, earning a 96% rating. If the remaining episodes are as well-received, the season could raise the overall score for the Fallout series, surpassing even the Cyberpunk 2077 show. This would mark the third time Amazon’s critically acclaimed series has broken a Rotten Tomatoes record.

Whether that will come to pass is still uncertain, but the strong reaction to the Season 2 premiere suggests we’re likely to see another popular season of this post-apocalyptic show. Just a heads-up: Season 2 is different from Season 1 – new episodes are being released each Wednesday instead of all at once.

The impressive success of the Fallout show comes at a time when Bethesda’s Todd Howard has revealed that the show’s storyline will influence the future Fallout 5 game. He explained that Fallout 5 will take place in a world where the events of the show have either already happened or are currently unfolding.
