In the 2024 Olympics, Secrets was the official deodorant for Team USA, but it’s Ava, daughter of single mom Sammy, who is causing a stir. Ava is grappling with her mother’s recent death and hidden secrets that she’s trying to keep under wraps. On top of this, Detective Richards is investigating an unsolved cold case that could affect both Ava and her mother. A supportive partner, Robert, is helping Ava stay strong emotionally, but a complete breakdown seems imminent. Matters are further complicated when Ava insists on discussing her mother’s suspicious past, which promises to culminate in a shocking disclosure.
The dramatic unveiling was overdue in this movie that moves at a snail’s pace, almost painfully so. Unfortunately, the background music is relentlessly whiny and never subsides. Directed and co-written by Christopher Norton with Elizabeth Norton, this marks their debut feature-length script. Coleman and Georgina deliver strong performances as mother and daughter, but McGrath’s portrayal of the detective feels like an outdated 70’s cop character in today’s world, where such behavior would have resulted in dismissal. The investigation itself lacks depth, with forensics playing a minimal role. However, the script’s skillful use of flashbacks and an unforeseen ending make it a worthwhile watch.
Coleman delivers a compelling performance as the emotionally distraught mother, growing increasingly anxious about the secrets that threaten to unravel, which are tantalizingly close to being exposed. Georgina, her daughter, further complicates matters for her mother with an authentic mix of sympathy and frustration. However, the plotline is somewhat overextended, bearing a strong resemblance to typical Channel 5 dramas.
