See Every Moment from the 2026 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony

Care for a winter spritz?

The 2026 Winter Olympics officially began in Northern Italy on February 6th, with around 3,000 top athletes from around the world competing in events like hockey, figure skating, and cross-country skiing.

At the opening event, themed “Harmony,” Terry Gordon from NBC Sports and Olympic reporter Mary Carillo were joined by snowboarding legend Shaun White to provide commentary during the Parade of Nations at San Siro Stadium in Milan. Savannah Guthrie of Today was originally scheduled to host, but she withdrew on February 3rd due to the ongoing search for her mother, Nancy Guthrie.

The show began with a dance troupe dressed as Greek angels performing a flowing, expressive dance that soon burst into vibrant color. More dancers joined, wearing bright costumes – one was even dressed as a coffee pot! – and they formed a rainbow circle. Then, Mariah Carey took the stage, flawlessly singing “Volare” in Italian before launching into her hit song, “Nothing is Impossible.”

Mariah announced in December, via Instagram, that she would be performing at the Opening Ceremony. In a video message, she excitedly said, “See you in Milan!”

Athletes have been training for the Olympics for years, and some are preparing to compete with heavy hearts. Veteran ice dancers Evan Bates and Madison Chock recently told TopMob News they plan to honor their teammates who tragically died in a plane crash in Washington D.C. last February during the upcoming games.

In a January interview with his wife, Madison, Evan explained that the best way to remember the victims would be to cherish every moment and appreciate life. Madison added that they are thankful for each day and the chances they have.

Oh my gosh, you guys, I’m seriously losing it! Jack Hughes just said he’s so excited to play in the Milano Cortina Olympics with his brother, Quinn! Can you even imagine?! He basically said it’s going to be a total family thing, and I’m already picturing all the adorable brotherly moments on the ice. I’m not ready, this is going to be epic!

Jack, 24, told TopMob News in January that it wasn’t just him and Quinn making the trip. He explained that many family members and friends – including his parents – who had supported them along the way would be joining them to share in the experience. He said they were grateful to have such a strong support system.

And then, dancers arrange themselves into this incredible rainbow shape below them… it’s just breathtaking, honestly. It really captures the spirit of Italian art, so colorful and full of life!
