See Rick Moranis’ First Red Carpet Appearance in Nearly 9 Years

Dark Helmet has returned—earlier than expected.

Rick Moranis, who has largely avoided public appearances for many years, unexpectedly appeared at CinemaCon on April 15th to hint at a new sequel to his 1987 comedy classic, Spaceballs.

Oh my gosh, it was AMAZING seeing Rick at the premiere! He was with all the original cast – Daphne Zuniga and Bill Pullman, of course – but also the new guys, Lewis Pullman and Josh Gad! I seriously lost it when they all stood together for photos. It was a dream come true to see all the generations of the movie together!

Mel Brooks, the creator of Spaceballs, announced the sequel’s new title in a pre-recorded video at CinemaCon. While he couldn’t attend the event in person, he revealed the movie won’t be called Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money as previously hinted. Instead, it will simply be titled Spaceballs: The New One.

Mel finished their message with, “See you at the movies, and may the Force be with you.”

Everyone is excited to see Rick back in a big movie role. The Ghostbusters star hasn’t been in a major film for over 20 years, with his last appearance being in Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves (1997), the third film in the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids series.

After his wife, Anne, passed away in 1991, the 72-year-old actor left Hollywood to concentrate on raising his two children.

He explained to The Hollywood Reporter in October 2015 that a break from acting ended up lasting longer than he initially planned. However, he remains open to new opportunities, saying he’s interested in any role that genuinely excites him. He still receives offers for film and television projects and is waiting for the right one to come along.

He fondly remembered working with talented and kind people before his wife died. Transitioning to full-time care for his young children was a big change, but he embraced it wholeheartedly. He has no regrets and feels incredibly grateful for his life now.

Rick is happy to be back on set, working with his fellow actors and director Josh Greenbaum, and has no regrets about the decision.

He recalled being on set in costume and feeling amazed to be working with Bill and Daphne again after 39 years. In an interview with Deadline posted to Instagram on April 16, he said he’d often look at them and wonder how it was even possible.

Daphne—who is reprising her role as Princess Vespa in the film—couldn’t agree more.

She said she felt incredibly fortunate. Working in her field had its ups and downs, but this particular experience was exceptional. It was a dream come true to have the chance to play and have fun at this point in her life.
