Well, well, well… How the tables turn.
Atlus and its parent company, SEGA, have been re-releasing older games for quite a while. These updated versions usually include extra content or improvements, and are often marketed as the most complete editions of the game.
Over time, customers have become increasingly unhappy with game re-releases. With so much emphasis on expansions, downloadable content, and updates, re-releases are now often seen as unfair to players, as they effectively require fans to buy the same game twice.
SEGA believes that a common practice – waiting for a more complete, ‘definitive’ version of a game – is now hurting initial sales, as many players are choosing to delay their purchase.
During a recent question and answer session with investors, the publisher was asked about a surprising decline in sales of older games, according to reports from GameBiz and translated by Automaton.
Games such as Metaphor: ReFantazio, released a few years ago, are at the center of discussions about declining sales. Despite receiving great reviews and positive player feedback, these games appear to be selling fewer copies recently.
SEGA explained that several things might have caused the issue, such as having many games released around the same time and facing competition from comparable titles.
What really struck me is that they actually said people might hold off on buying something new because they’re worried a better version will come out later! It’s honest, and I totally get why someone would hesitate if they thought a ‘definitive’ edition was just around the corner.
We often see comments like this online and in our own discussions. Many people, for instance, said they’d wait for a potential re-release when Metaphor first came out, believing one was likely.
The re-release of Metaphor hasn’t come out yet, and there’s been talk that Atlus plans to release it as one complete package. If that’s the case, it might be a response to what SEGA is hinting at in their recent report.
