Two classic Sega Genesis games – one from 1990 and an even older title – are finally coming to the west this summer after being unavailable for decades. They’ll be released on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. While versions for newer consoles like the Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 haven’t been announced, they will likely be playable on those systems through backward compatibility. Currently, there are no plans to release the games on Xbox or PC. The official release date is August 29, 2026.
Clear River Games is bringing a classic arcade collection to Nintendo Switch and PS4 on August 29th. Called Flying Fire Shark!!!: Toaplan Arcade Garage, it features the beloved games Flying Shark and Fire Shark. Originally released in Japan in 2022, this is the first time players in the West will be able to experience this collection.
The first game, Flying Shark, was originally released in 1987. It’s a classic vertically scrolling shooter – a popular style for arcade games at the time. Developed by Toaplan, it’s the game that gives the collection, Toaplan Arcade Garage, its name. While it first appeared in arcades, it was later ported to several home computers and consoles, including the Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, FM Towns, MS-DOS, X68000, ZX Spectrum, and NES. Its sequel, however, wasn’t as widely released.
A follow-up game called Fire Shark was created by the same team and released in arcades in 1989. It was then brought to the Sega Genesis in 1990, and that remains the only other system it has ever appeared on, making it exclusive to the Genesis.
Players can experience the games as they were originally designed in “Arcade Mode,” which offers the classic, challenging gameplay. We’re also including a “Super Easy Mode” to make the games more accessible for newcomers.
While Hisho Same and Flying Shark are the main attractions of this new game collection, it actually includes several other titles: Sky Shark, multiple versions of Same! Same! Same!, Fire Shark, and Teki-Paki (available as free downloadable content). The price of the collection hasn’t been announced yet.
