Netflix has had an incredible run with animated movies in the 2020s. While KPop Demon Hunters has become a massive success – breaking records, winning awards, and becoming their most popular movie ever, with another one planned – they’ve also released a diverse collection of other fantastic films. From titles like Nimona, The Sea Beast, Over the Moon, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, and Leo, to their newest hit, Swapped, Netflix has consistently delivered high-quality animated content.
One of Netflix’s best animated films is The Mitchells vs. the Machines. It’s easy to overlook since it came out in 2021 – which feels like a long time ago, especially considering the pandemic – but it’s a truly excellent movie about a family who has to save the world from a robot rebellion. A sequel was announced in 2025, but news has been quiet until now. According to What’s On Netflix, the working title is The Mitchells vs. the Mitchells, and here’s a sneak peek at the story:
The first movie followed the Mitchells, an ordinary family, as they saved the world from a robot uprising. Now, in the sequel, they face an even bigger challenge: encountering alternate versions of themselves.
The Mitchells Vs. The Machines 2 Is One Of Several Exciting Upcoming Netflix Animated Movies

The sequel to The Mitchells vs. the Machines promises to be another thrilling adventure. The first film focused on a family overcoming their differences while battling robots, and the new movie seems to continue that theme by making the threat personal – potentially machines resembling the family, or even a story involving multiple universes. Luckily, if it is a multiverse story, it’s in capable hands, as Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – known for their work on the Spider-Verse films – are executive producers.
The upcoming sequel is just one of many animated films planned for the streaming service, signaling a strong commitment to the medium and its popularity – a commitment that’s understandable given the success of KPop Demon Hunters. Several movies are scheduled for release in 2026, including I Am Frankelda, a dark fantasy told through stop-motion animation; Steps, which reimagines the Cinderella story from the perspective of the stepsisters (voiced by Ali Wong and Stephanie Hsu, with Amanda Seyfried as Cinderella); and Ray Gunn, a retro-futuristic detective story directed by Brad Bird, known for The Incredibles.
Looking ahead, several exciting projects are in the works. A new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie is coming, directed by Taika Waititi, and another Ghostbusters film is also planned. Netflix is planning sequels to its original animated hits, Leo and The Sea Beast. While it will take a few years to produce The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 due to the time-consuming nature of animation, it promises to be worth the wait if it matches the creativity, fun, and stunning visuals of the original – a film that deserves to be mentioned alongside animated masterpieces like the Spider-Verse movies and KPop Demon Hunters.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines is available to stream now on Netflix.
