SEGA announced it will be celebrating its classic game franchises this year with special projects, all under a new initiative called SEGA Universe.
Although not every project will be a new video game, the publisher plans to revisit and celebrate popular older titles. They want to find fresh ways for fans to experience these classics, going beyond just traditional gaming. This initiative is built around the motto, “No Old, Stay Gold.”
So, I’m really excited because SEGA Universe is bringing back a bunch of classic games to celebrate their anniversaries! They’re really pulling out all the stops with some of my favorites.
- Fantasy Zone
- Outrun
- Streets of Rage
- Rent a Hero
- Guardian Heroes
- NiGHTS
- Dynamite Deka
- Sakura Wars
- SGGG
In 2026, several beloved games will reach major milestones. SGGG will celebrate its 25th anniversary, while Outrun hits 40 years. Streets of Rage will turn 35, and NiGHTS will be 30. Check out the trailer below for more details!
The project’s website describes a feeling that endures through time. It acknowledges that things change and are sometimes lost, but a certain energy remains – a persistent spark. It’s not about longing for the past, but recognizing that same drive still exists today, undiminished and ready to be reignited with even greater intensity. It’s a call to action, to repeat a past success, but to push even further next time.
SEGA has been talking about bringing back old favorites for a while now. Last December, under the “Power Surge” campaign, they announced plans for new games in the Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Shinobi series. So far, only Shinobi: Art of Vengeance has actually been released as part of that effort.
SEGA Universe is described as a shared world where classic games and characters still exist today, evolving and expanding beyond just video games. It’s growing into movies, music, fashion, and other forms of entertainment, constantly being refreshed and updated. Everything created within SEGA Universe is meant to be memorable and shared with future generations.
