Based on the original light novel by Rocket Shokai and Mephists, the series was highly anticipated when it premiered this winter, and it lived up to expectations. Kivia, a character initially presented as a strict and impatient captain, has undergone a significant transformation throughout the series, especially in her interactions with the more unconventional hero, Xylo. Bennett shared, “She has all sorts of facets to her that I’m happy I’ve gotten to play,” hinting at further development for Kivia.

When I started working on Sentenced to Be a Hero, my first impression of Kivia was that she’d be a very strict, no-nonsense military leader. I worried she might be a one-dimensional character, which can happen with roles like that. But the show really surprised me! Kivia is so much more complex, and I’ve really enjoyed exploring all those different sides of her. It’s fascinating how her voice and mannerisms change depending on who she’s talking to – she’s very different with Xylo at the beginning of the season compared to how she is now. And the way she interacts with her soldiers, her uncle, or Teoritta is completely different – with Teoritta, she’s almost like a big sister or even a mother figure, which is really sweet.

Bennett shared that he’s happy the character isn’t simply defined by her role as captain. She has personal interests and goals, and it’s been enjoyable discovering those – like her fondness for dresses, looking nice, and ice cream. Despite being a strong leader, these interests add a welcome contrast to how she initially appears. Bennett also expressed curiosity about the developing romantic connection between Kivia and Xylo, which seems to be growing as they spend more time together.

Is Kivia Interested in Xylo?

I’ve been watching Kivia and Xylo, and I’m really curious to see if something romantic will happen between them. It’s hard to tell right now – there are little signs, like blushing, but it’s unclear if she likes him as more than a friend. It’s especially complicated because she’s currently pretending to be his girlfriend, and she’s even asking questions about his actual fiancé! Honestly, I find myself wondering where she’s going with all of this. I’m really hoping to see how their story unfolds.
