As a movie enthusiast, I’m always on the lookout for intriguing theories about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here’s one that could shed light on the origins of Sentry’s powers in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie. Lewis Pullman, who plays Robert “Bob” Reynolds’ Sentry, has joined the MCU, and his character was created through an experimental super-soldier serum, a secret project overseen by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and OXE.
Sentry’s powers are off the charts, but we haven’t fully seen the extent of his dark counterpart, The Void. This unpredictability could tie up a lingering plot thread from 2017, adding another layer to the already intricate Marvel tapestry.
Robert Reynolds served as a guinea pig for OXE’s tests involving a groundbreaking drug known as the Golden Sentry Serum, believed to transform individuals into their optimal selves. Though it’s suggested that de Fontaine’s OXE concocted the serum, an intriguing hypothesis proposes that the serum could have originated from residual fragments of Ego, the celestial being portrayed by Kurt Russell in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”. Given Ego’s immense power, it’s plausible that this celestial entity had enough strength to transform Reynolds into the Sentry, making him capable of overpowering the Thunderbolts and wreaking havoc across all of New York City.
In 2017, I found myself utterly captivated by “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”, where we met Ego, Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) celestial father, who was on a mission to extend his consciousness across every world in the cosmos, even Earth. However, the Guardians thwarted his plans, leaving behind a massive chunk of his expansion right here in Missouri. Marvel Studios has been silent about this remnant for the past eight years, but it would be fantastic if the Sentry’s powers could somehow be linked to Ego’s cosmic expansion, offering a straightforward and comprehensible origin story for Reynolds’ abilities.
Connecting the Missouri-covering part of Ego’s consciousness to the Thunderbolts team could be as significant as revisiting the character Tiamut in Captain America: Brave New World, by giving credence to a crucial event in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This would be quite a departure from Robert Reynolds’ original Marvel Comics storyline, where he gained immense power after exposure to an experimental serum, but Marvel Studios is known for making bold changes like this.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s significant that Ego is depicted as Star-Lord’s celestial father, which is a major shift from the comics. It’s not unreasonable to imagine a connection between him and Sentry as well. In the MCU’s Phase 2, we only got a glimpse of Ego’s immense power, and Peter Quill didn’t manifest his inherited abilities since they were nullified following Ego’s death. Robert Reynolds could be an ideal character to portray a Celestial’s full spectrum of powers in human form, potentially showcasing this in the movie “Avengers: Doomsday” when Lewis Pullman reprises his role.
