Sequel Movie in a 12-Film Action Franchise That’s Been Running for 33 Years Is a Hit on Netflix

When people think of popular movie series, franchises like James Bond, Star Wars, and Marvel are usually the first to come to mind. These brands have consistently released successful films that appeal to audiences around the world. However, movie series come in many forms—and some, even if less well-known, have been around for a long time. For instance, action movie fans might not be familiar with the Sniper series, which began in 1993 and has mostly been released directly to home video. Now, thanks to streaming, one of the Sniper movies is reaching a wider audience.

From April 13th to 19th, Sniper 2 ranked as the sixth most popular movie on Netflix worldwide. It earned 3.6 million views and a total of 5.5 million hours of watch time, just beating out the film War Machine for its place in the top 10. This marked the first week Sniper 2 appeared on Netflix’s weekly top 10 list.

What Is Sniper 2 (and Why Is it a Streaming Hit?)

The first Sniper movie didn’t perform exceptionally well in theaters, bringing in only $19 million. While it wasn’t a flop – it only cost $5.3 million to make – it took almost ten years for a sequel to be created. Sniper 2 arrived in 2002, but instead of playing in cinemas, it premiered as a TV movie on Cinemax. Tom Berenger returned as Thomas Beckett, tasked with eliminating a Serbian general.

Because Sniper 2 came out a long time ago and didn’t have a big release, there aren’t many reviews available. Rotten Tomatoes only has four, but surprisingly, they’re fairly balanced. Half are positive, and half are negative – even one of the negative reviews suggests the movie is worth renting. It’s not being called a hidden gem, but there’s still enjoyment to be found. The acting, especially the chemistry between Berenger and Bokeem Woodbine (who plays Jake Cole, the sniper’s spotter), is a standout. Plus, action fans who know what to expect will find enough thrills to keep them entertained.

It’s a little unexpected to find Sniper 2 among Netflix’s most popular movies and shows, alongside newer releases like Thrash, Roommates, Sisu, and Anaconda. The recent release of Sniper: No Nation on April 7th likely boosted interest in the older films. While the Sniper series isn’t a huge blockbuster franchise, it has a dedicated fanbase who actively seek out the movies. After watching the newest installment, those fans may have decided to revisit some of the earlier films, including Sniper 2.

The popularity of Sniper 2 on streaming platforms suggests it has a significant international fanbase. Since it’s not available on Netflix in the U.S. – only for rent or purchase digitally – all those views must be coming from viewers outside the country. This mirrors the success of the Escape Plan movies, showing international audiences enjoy action films released directly to video. These movies are ideal for streaming because they offer easy, enjoyable entertainment – viewers can simply relax and watch the action.
