Warner Bros. is likely considering a follow-up to Ryan Coogler’s vampire film, Sinners, though it’s currently planned as a one-time movie. Editor Michael P. Shawver shared that while Coogler hasn’t committed to a sequel, the director does have some intriguing concepts if he decides to make another film.
At the Critics Choice Awards, where he was up for Best Film Editing but didn’t win (losing to F1), editor Shawver spoke with CBR about Sinners 2. He revealed that director Coogler isn’t interested in making a sequel, which Shawver understands. Shawver has pitched Coogler several sequel ideas – around five or six – and finds them all compelling. He mentioned one possibility would be to explore different time periods, potentially even a prequel showing the twins’ lives in Chicago before the events of the film.
I believe each time period has its own unique feel, and what’s great about ‘Sinners’ is that it includes a lot of exciting elements like vampires and blues music. But beyond that, it also subtly teaches viewers about the economic realities of the past, things they might not have known before.
It would be interesting to explore the experiences of people after slavery, before today, and how different eras impacted them. You could even look at the 1920s, when the characters Smoke and Stack were in Chicago, to see how life was then.
Neither Ryan Coogler nor Warner Bros. has confirmed a follow-up film to Sinners, but visual effects supervisor John Shawver believes there’s plenty of story left to tell. He’s confident that with Coogler’s attention to detail, combined with his talented team and cast, any future movie would be incredibly authentic.
