Science fiction films have been particularly impressive in the 2020s, and the trend looks set to continue. Recent releases like Dune, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Poor Things demonstrate the genre at its finest. This builds on a strong period for smart, thought-provoking sci-fi that began roughly 10-15 years ago, with notable contributions from filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan, Alex Garland, and Denis Villeneuve.
Denis Villeneuve has truly led the way in blockbuster science fiction films over the last ten years, especially with his Dune movies. Dune: Part Two was a remarkable achievement and will be remembered as a classic of the genre—along with, in my opinion, his films Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. With over $700 million earned at the box office, along with critical praise and Oscar nominations, a sequel was all but guaranteed. Dune: Part Three will be based on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune: Messiah, and is currently slated for release on December 18, 2026, finishing a very exciting year for science fiction fans.
What’s The Most Exciting Sci-Fi Movie Of 2026?

I was completely blown away by Dune: Part Two, and I’m excited to see where Denis Villeneuve takes the story next. He’s been amazing so far, but adapting Messiah, the next book, will be a real test. It gets much stranger and more complex, making it difficult to translate to film, and matching the quality of Part Two will be a huge challenge. Even putting those concerns aside, I’m actually more excited about a couple of other sci-fi movies coming out in 2026.
Ridley Scott, a celebrated director known for science fiction, is tackling a new post-apocalyptic story called The Dog Stars, starring Jacob Elordi. The film is set in a world devastated by a virus that has decimated the population. Scott’s previous non-franchise sci-fi film, 2015’s The Martian, is widely considered a standout of the 21st century, and this new project promises a similar level of quality.
Fans of The Martian will likely enjoy Project Hail Mary, which is coming out just a week after The Dog Stars. It’s based on a book by The Martian author Andy Weir, and the screenplay is written by the same person who wrote the movie adaptation of The Martian, Drew Goddard. The trailer suggests a similar feel – a funny, dramatic space adventure with an unlikely hero. This time, the hero is a high school science teacher played by Ryan Gosling, who seems perfect for the role, and he’s sent on a mission to save Earth. Adding to the excitement, the film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, a dynamic directing duo who haven’t worked on a live-action movie in over a decade – making this a highly anticipated return for them.
While Project Hail Mary currently seems like the most promising sci-fi film of 2026, Steven Spielberg’s untitled UFO movie is a strong contender. Just hearing Spielberg’s name generates excitement – he’s a true legend in the genre. The film is expected to be reminiscent of his classic movies like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T., and with the addition of thriller aspects and Emily Blunt as the lead, it’s shaping up to be a major event.

Keep an eye out for Flowervale Street, a new film from the director of It Follows, David Robert Mitchell. Details are scarce, but it centers on a couple – Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor – who begin to notice odd things happening around their neighborhood, and it apparently involves dinosaurs. Recent dinosaur movies haven’t always been successful (like the Adam Driver film 65), so it would be great to see a fresh take that isn’t just another Jurassic movie.
Beyond these highlights, many popular franchises with a science fiction focus will be releasing new content, including The Mandalorian and Grogu, Masters of the Universe, Supergirl, and Avengers: Doomsday – all promising exciting adventures. Considering these and many other unannounced or upcoming projects, 2026 is looking like a fantastic year for the sci-fi genre. Here are the release dates for the films mentioned:
- Project Hail Mary – March 20th
- The Dog Stars – March 27th
- The Mandalorian and Grogu – May 22nd
- Masters of the Universe – June 5th
- Untitled Steven Spielberg movie – June 12th
- Supergirl – June 26th
- Flowervale Street – August 14th
- Avengers: Doomsday – December 18th
- Dune: Part Three – December 18th
