Apple TV+ is quickly becoming known for its excellent science fiction shows, with popular originals like Severance and See, and adaptations such as Silo, Murderbot, and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. However, the best show on the platform might surprise you – it’s not sci-fi at all! It’s a charming, low-key British comedy/drama. If you think you’ve seen everything Apple TV+ has to offer, you might have overlooked a real treasure. It’s time to revisit the service and get ready to be captivated by the heartwarming and often emotional journey that is Trying.
If you’re looking for a great show on Apple TV+, check out Trying. This British comedy-drama first aired in 2020 on BBC (in the UK) and Apple TV+ everywhere else. Created by Andy Wolton, the series centers on Jason and Nikki, a London couple who are eager to start a family. When they struggle to conceive, they explore adoption, quickly realizing it’s a far more complicated process than they expected. Here’s what the show is about:
Jason and Nikki desperately want to start a family, but they’ve been unable to have a baby naturally. They decide to explore adoption, but with quirky friends, a complicated family, and already-busy lives, they worry whether they’ll convince the adoption agency they’re prepared to be parents.
Rafe Spall and Esther Smith lead the cast of this series, playing Jason and Nikki. The show also features a talented ensemble cast including Sian Brooke, Oliver Chris, Darren Boyd, Phil Davis, Ophelia Lovibond, and Robyn Cara. Imelda Staunton, known from the Harry Potter films, appears as Penny, an unexpectedly candid adoption support worker, in the first season. All four seasons are currently available to stream on Apple TV+. Each episode is about 25 to 30 minutes long, making the show perfect for binge-watching.
‘Trying’ Is One of Apple TV+’s Highest Rated Shows

Apple TV+/BBC
As a huge fan of quality TV, I honestly don’t get why Apple TV+ hasn’t been shouting about Trying from the rooftops. It’s consistently brilliant! Critics absolutely love it – it has a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes across all four seasons, and audiences give it a 91%. The first season was good, scoring 88%, but it really hit its stride with season two. In fact, both seasons two and four have perfect 100% scores from critics, which is pretty rare these days. It deserves way more attention!
One viewer described the series as “absolutely fantastic,” saying they cried throughout every episode. They praised its humor, entertainment value, and emotional impact, calling the writing “genius.” Many other viewers expressed similar enthusiastic reactions to the show.
“This show is amazing! All of the seasons, Apple, please renew for Season 5!”
Good news for fans! Season 5 of Trying is happening, and it’s already been filmed! We don’t have a date for when you can watch it yet, but production is complete.
