Shang-Chi Star Simu Liu Announces First Draft of Sleeping Dogs Movie Script is Done

Simu Liu, known for his role in *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings*, has shared exciting news about his long-held dream of turning the video game *Sleeping Dogs* into a film. He announced on social media that the first draft of the movie script is now finished.

Alongside this news, Liu discussed his collaboration with Square Enix, the owners of the *Sleeping Dogs* game series. He shared that working with them has been a positive experience so far, but mentioned that other studios are struggling to fully recognize the potential value of the *Sleeping Dogs* franchise.

He praised Square Enix, saying they are ‘absolutely great.’ He also noted that some studios don’t fully appreciate the value of their intellectual property, but he’s confident they’ll eventually understand its importance.

Back in January, Liu first mentioned his desire to create a movie based on *Sleeping Dogs*, and shared his frustration that film industry leaders didn’t fully appreciate the potential of the game. He’s also expressed interest in developing a sequel to the original *Sleeping Dogs* game in the future.

In a social media post from January, Liu explained how rare it is for a film idea to get approved. They also expressed frustration with executives who don’t seem to understand the industry, and shared excitement about the strong positive response to *Sleeping Dogs*, which has been a major boost to the project.

“First a movie, then a sequel game for everyone… That’s always been the dream.”

So, this new attempt to make a *Sleeping Dogs* movie isn’t the first time this has happened, apparently. Back in 2018, they were already trying to get a film made, and Donnie Yen was even supposed to be in it! He said things were still moving forward then, but later he let slip that the whole project had fallen apart. It’s kinda frustrating as a fan to see this happen again, honestly.

In a recent interview with Polygon, Yen explained that he dedicated years of effort and personal funds to developing the project, including securing drafts and rights. He was deeply passionate about bringing his vision to life, but ultimately, the project didn’t move forward – a common experience in Hollywood, he noted.

Sleeping Dogs is an open-world action game set in Hong Kong. Though it didn’t revolutionize the genre like games such as Grand Theft Auto or Saints Row, it gained a dedicated following thanks to its compelling story, numerous side missions, and focus on martial arts combat instead of relying heavily on gunplay.

I first played *Sleeping Dogs* when it came out in 2012 on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, and I loved it! Thankfully, they released a *Definitive Edition* a few years later for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It looks so much better now and runs really smoothly. If you’re curious why I still think it’s a fantastic game after all this time, you can check out my review!
