The latest episode of ITV1’s spy thriller, Betrayal, left viewers on the edge of their seats with a shocking twist that will significantly impact the rest of the series.
In the episode’s closing scene, John, the MI5 agent portrayed by Shaun Evans, was shown waiting in a car for Mehreen, the new agent (played by Zahra Ahmadi) who was coming to replace him.
Mehreen was caught on the phone, and shockingly, it seems she was talking to someone connected to the Iranian government. She told them that John had located General Asadi, and warned that “we’re compromised.” She then said he could “still be stopped,” which suggests she’s not loyal to John or MI5.

Evans explained that they’re still considering certain elements right up until the play’s conclusion. He praised David Eldridge, the writer, for skillfully weaving in unexpected plot developments and staying true to the conventions of the genre, all while maintaining a sense of realism.
Beyond the main plot about espionage, the play Betrayal also explores the dissolving marriage of John, portrayed by Evans, and Claire, played by Romola Garai.
Throughout the season, viewers will also see strong performances from Gamba Cole (known for The Outlaws), Omid Djalili (His Dark Materials), Matthew Tennyson (Grantchester), Hayley Tamaddon (Unforgotten), Anthony Flanagan (House of the Dragon), Paddy Rowan (G’wed), and Waj Ali (Out There).

Evans mentioned the show might come back for another season if enough people wanted it, but he emphasized it wasn’t initially created with the intention of being a continuing series.
He explained it wasn’t about creating a never-ending cycle. He believed that approach wouldn’t work and felt it was unnecessarily pessimistic.
Betrayal is available to stream in full on ITVX.
